This could be a good idea. Bandwith use to much?

no not really, chats don't take up that much bandwith as long as you don't keep a chat record for longer than a few days or a week

I would think if someone wants to chat they have the option of listing it in their profile. It would be through aol or yahoo or irc though.

Sgt.Mac nailed it- the idea was discussed and decided long ago.

In the interest of explaining the reasoning to newcomers, we discussed this about 3 months into the board. The idea is that many things would be discussed in a chat setting, that would never make it to the archives of the board; therefore, others would miss out on what could be a great idea or solution.

As has been mentioned, I activated the option for any number of Instant Message programs, plus Skype, when I set the board up. You can feel free to use those settings, and it will show up on an individual's post (and profile) if they are online with Yahoo!, MSN Messenger, AOL, Skype, etc.

There is the third party option of an IRC room on some random server. Call it #bcusa or something. The downside is that it could just as easily develop into the chat setting you were trying to avoid by not putting one right on the site. I tend to agree here as we definitely want all the knowledge written in stone for further use. It'd have to take on a casual "talk about sports/beer/the family/whatever" with the guys type thing to be effective.
