Hey, I think BB's thread here is a great idea. Wanna let's share some of our mail-order retail sources? Good to know what's available where north of the Border. I'll start. But I'm sure most of mine are well-known to you all. Mostly I buy from local stores (I LOVE Canadian Tire)

I've bought stuff here, 'cause I'm close to them. (I find them not as good as they used to be as the venerarable old S.I.R.) :
Cabelas in WPG: http://www.cabelas.ca

Whoelsale sports - my favourite and Canadian owned: http://ca.wholesalesports.com

Mountain Equipment Co-op (while I find some of their stuff has been priced by an apparently insane person) they do have some great deals there, as we all know, including some great deals on some interesting folding knives and a bacho folding saw for 19 bucks): http://www.mec.ca

I've ordered paracord from here, and I have an order in now for some more and a new US type ss cup/stove and plastic canteen - out of Regina. Good to deal with, so far: http://www.greatadventure.ca

Don't forget about Lee Valley Tools - another great Canadian company. I get neat outdoorsy stuff here all the time (including my backpacking saw) and I am close enough to drive in to them too: http://leevalley.com/

I've had some good experience with a local (TO) Lebaron I went to once, and their catalogue looks reasonably priced: http://www.lebaron.ca

I've never shopped here... yet... (it seems kinda pricey) but we're referred top elsewhere to: http://www.workwearcanada.com

So, that's all I can think of for now.

How about you guys? Any suggestions/reccomendations?

I'd like to know where I could get good quality military surplus stuff. I stopped in one place in Regina and got a poncho that smells like puke... Those shelter halves people here talk about - can we find them in Canada?

Hey BushyBeard, thanks for the links and info. I actually knew of the last one and missed listing it above. Looks like a great army surplus store, too. Worth knowing. Good thread man.

I know the owner. A lot of his sales are done near the Greater Toronto Area, and so he does "house call sales". He's in the process of revamping his website, to show more details.

Great guy who is in the business to offer the best deals for fellow Canadian Woodsmen. He makes a living elsewhere, so this store is his hobby/passion.

I don't make any gain for endorsing this guy, I just know what he's like. Bought some good kit off him for a really reasonable price.

I've had some good experiences so far with Hero Army Surplus http://www.heroarmysurplus.com/ based out of Oshawa, ON.

Sometimes their site is down. No big deal. Sometimes the site is hard to find things - just use the search box.
Coolest part is on my last order, I ordered a few things, they called me saying it was ready to ship, except one item was out of stock for a couple weeks. Asked me if I wanted a comparable (and more expensive) item instead, at no additional cost to me. Seriously nice touch. Can't say I've ever had a company do that for me.

So far I've ordered twice from them, the shipping is very reasonable (Canada Post Expedited rates are fair, gets out here to Vancouver in a few days, and they provide a tracking number with your order.)

Give em a look. :)

I don't have any new suggestions, but I can't speak highly enough of Canadian Outdoor Equipment. Their prices are usually a bit higher, but over the past three years I have been buying from them regularly and their customer service has been truly excellent. Far beyond my expectations and experiences elsewhere.

I will personally vouch for Canadian Outdoor Equipment. I know Chris, the owner personally. He, and his store are top notch. Chris cares about his customers, and is an avid outdoorsman. I've purchased a fair bit of gear there, and have yet to be disappointed, and to boot, orders over $ 50 are shipped free across Canada. (I have no affiliation with Can. Out. Equip.).
Give 'em a try, they have a great selection of Scandanavian knives and Maxpedition gear, plus much more.
Cheers
Alex

Canadian Outdoor Equipment is an overpriced yuppy backpacking store in downtown toronto. The prices they advertise are robbery.
Their price:
Mora Companion. 22.95
Mora Bushcraft Black 63.50 (I recall this being 99$ recently)
Mora Classic #2 19.95

Now, these are the prices of North Trail Sports site, also in Toronto, maybe 20km away.
Mora Companion 12.99
Mora Bushcraft Black 45.99
Mora Classic #2 11.99

By the way, North trail can be found here http://www.northtrailsports.com/index.php and he carries the whole line of Moras.

Not so true. Store in downtown Toronto closed. That store was geared towards the wayward 'yuppies'. Not so the small store in Mississauga. Their prices are higher than average on some items(not sure about Mora's) but geared toward better quality items. Purchased a Helle knife there that I could find nowhere else. Purchased a Gransfor Bruchs Axe that I had always wanted and could not find elsewhere. The upshot is, I'm far from ever being a yuppie, but I saved up for years for these and other items, because I knew the quality was there and with care I could pass these down to my daughter...not so much with the outdoor crap from chinaland, flogged from Cdn tire to other outdoor stores Lebarons, MEC,etc. now that's robbery.
Cheers
Alex
