The mission of Bushcraft USA is to provide a North American focused forum for bushcraft and related activities. There are differences between the North American continent and the rest of the world, both geographically and culturally. We intend to explore the differences and similarities between the two philosophies. While this is primarily geared towards the USA and North America, anyone is welcome to join.

Recently I acquired a used wood shredder to help dispose of branches I limb off trees. Never used one before and they are pretty darn handy. The issue I ran in to was how the machine literally shoots the shreddings 20 feet across the yard, causing you to spend time raking them up.

I was short on daylight and did not want to spend time building something to help contain the shreddings, so I activated my resource finder and found an excellent solution below. I also found out that the shreddings make EXCELLENT material for birds nests when building a fire.

That's the top half of a large "dogloo". Fit perfectly around the shoot and made a neat pile of shreddings.

Hello,

I have been reading the forum for a while and decided to join. I grew up playing in the woods of Philadelphia (Fairmount Park). I would spend all day throughout the summer in the woods and creeks. Now at 41 I am trying to get back into it and have my kids experience as much nature as possible. As you know growing up you could be gone all day and your parents weren't worried, now we are afraid to let them out of our sight.

I bought some camping equipment and plan to start really soon. Bought to 2 Mora's also! We are in the process of selling/buying a house so there hasn't been too much free time. I plan to have a little more property in the new house so that will help a little. Possibly a little wooded area.

I want to keep the camping equipment to a minimum and teach ( and learn at the same time) my children how to survive in nature.

I have to say that this has been the nicest group of people I have seen on internet forums. I mostly frequent different car forums.

Thanks,

Scott

A friend who was helping had found a broken stainless steel digging fork tine and suggested that it might make a good marlin spike. That got me thinking, so I had ago at grinding one out.

Used an old broken Hickory sledge handle to supply the wood for the handle and a bit of copper fuel line as a ferrule, turned out a bit quirky looking but does the job.

After watching Sgt Mac's Chong vids in which he makes use of a toggle rope I thought it looked too cool to not to have a try at making one. I was going to nick a few yards of the works rope but decided to opt for a thinner 20mm hemp instead.
Mac was a great help and supplied dimensions for the toggle as they were hard to find. The same broken Hickory handle was used for the toggle and it was shaped using a rasp, chisel and sand paper then finished with linseed oil.
Saw this little guy. I'm not usually much of a birder, but he was definitely unusual for the area. I may have to start a life list.
Easy to ID, he is clearly a Violet-Green Swallow at the northern end of his range. At first we thought he was injured, he let me get within a foot with the camera before flying away. But I guess he was just happy sunning himself on the rocks. Sadly, my closeup is slightly blurry, but not too bad with an iPhone!

My interest in leather work got a jump start over the weekend. I made two simple pouch sheaths for my Victorinox and Case knives.

With a few supplies and a bag of scrap leather my project was underway. The entire process took about four hours.

My project goals were to get my feet wet working with leather. To make a protective pouch for my EDC backup blade and to work on a bushcraft type project indoors while it rained outside.

Here are a few photos of the final product and the work in progress.

Hey fellow bushcrafters, it's great to see there are nearly 30,000 others who share my passion for the outdoors. Growing up, as a child of ten, reading Tom brown guide to wilderness survival, tracking and urban survival till the pages fell out of the bindings, I never really fit in with the football, baseball crowd. Now at 40 I'm getting back to some unfinished business. I dusted off my sundowners, made a sheath for my bk-2 and charred some cloth over a firebox.... Yeah... I'm BACK baby- and it feels great. I have a lot of catching up to do, a ton of things to learn, and a thing or two to share. I can't wait

Now, if I could just figure out how to post stuff on this computer thingy...

I was lucky and came across this sugar cane knife at a garage sale yesterday for $1.00. The elderly lady said her son brought it back from Hawaii many years ago and was happy I knew what it was. It was pretty rusty but serviceable. There are still a few nicks in the blade I need to work out but it will be a great chopper and the hook is perfect for pulling blackberry and poison oak vines out of the way.

Before:

After clean-up. I rasped and sanded the handle to be more even with the tang and gave it a little stain and oil.

Deep chopper:

Not too shabby with the fine work either:

Thanks for looking!
