    In my opinion the lanyard is more of a combat thing. The last thing you wanna do is lose your knife, tomahawk, sword, machete, e tool, etc in a fight. I insist on one on my machetes, unless I'm using it as a draw knife. Look up sword knots and you'll see the original lanyard. Wrapped properly, prevents loss of the sword or dagger and also prevents shifting in you grip. I also occasionally use the lanyard as retention device on the sheath, specifically on knives without guards.image.jpg here is the one I made with a 4 strand round braid and Turks head knotimage.jpg and another of the way I utilize itimage.jpg

    try a Round or Square Sinnet. make as long as you want and compact. can be done with 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 leads, depending how big you want it. ( i know, because the biggest i've done is 9) i made a small boat fender keyring for a buddy.Tying It Altogether on youtube has several different videos.
