Default What's on your Bushcraft bucket list?

    What’s on your bucket list?

The month of May was extremely busy at work, leaving me absolutely zero woods time, and June is going to be much worse unfortunately. This lack of adventure time has left me daydreaming. I started to think about Mr. Black’s dream of doing Mt. Whitney- Otzi style, and how cool that would be and it made me really start thinking about what I wanted on my bucket list.

I recently read again (for the umpteenth time) “Hunting with the Bow and Arrow” by Saxton Pope. If you are a bow hunter, and have not read this book, you are missing out! It always leaves me longing for a truly primitive bow hunt… So that’s what I’m doing.

By primitive, I mean that every piece of tackle will be made by me. Bow, arrows, bow string, broadheads, quiver, knife and every other thing that I carry on this hunt will be hand made by me. Clothing? Haven’t got that figured out yet, but rest assured that I will not be running around in a loin cloth!

It will be at least a 2 or 3 day hunt, probably for elk or deer but possibly bear.

Any shelter materials will either be handmade by me or constructed in the forest.

I don’t have all of the details yet, as this will be a dream in the works, but I want to keep it as period (Pope and Young’s time period) correct as I can, which will undoubtedly lead to a lot of research. I am going to try to accomplish this in less than 2 years from now.

So that’s where I am at right now, mostly just dreaming…. But I WILL do this…

    So what’s on your list?

That is good stuff! Top of my list is a full blown hunt in Alaska, kind of a "High, Wild and Free" moment. Bear, moose, caribou out of a canoe down a river somewhere. Happy day

That would be quite an accomplishment! What draws you to that specific trail?

Convenience, since I live in CA. I'd be thrilled to hike one of the other major through trails as well (Continental Divide and Appalachian).

Any plans yet? Or still in the dream stage?

My list is short and sweet. I want to hike The A.T. in my home state of North Carolina, heck I'd love to try the whole thing but I know I'm too busted for a hike that long. Then I would love to go back to Alaska for some serious camping.... interior and then maybe down around Haines, Scagway, Juneau area. As good as British Columbia without crossing into Canada, saves all the border and passport doodads.
