Default Mini 14? Or other suggestions?

Anbody have experience with a Mini 14? I've been looking for something afordable that will do well as an all around rifle, but has the ability to put out some firepower if needed. I used to love m M4, but, it's only affordable for me when issued by uncle sam LOL. Not a cheap rifle, for sure. I know an AK does nicely, and people use SKS's all the time, but I've never fired an SKS. Used an AK a couple times... Decent in closer environment...

Anyhow, Any suggestions for an all round rifle like I've mentioned?

I have had Mini 14s and they are a VERY reliable gun

Eat everything I put in them

Bad thing is best groups I ever got were about 3" at 100 yards.

I think you're on the right track. Lots of people love the mini-14 and 13. I don't personally own one but absolutely love the look of em.

People also sing the praises of the AK-47 quite a bit. Pretty sure it reigns supreme when it comes to reliability and affordability. Have fun making your decision!

I had one years ago and it was a great rifle. Lately I've been thinking about getting another one in 7.62 x 39mm or 6.8 SPC.

I had one once and got rid of it pretty quick. I can't tell you why I didn't like it, it just wasn't an AR I guess.

In any case it had serviceable accuracy and I can't recall any problems with reliability. I do recall magazines being a pain in my behind. When I got it I was under the impression that it took M-16 mags, point of fact it does not. And the Ruger mags were expensive.

On the other hand I do still have every AR-15 and AK style rifle I have ever bought and predict I will until I got to meet my maker.

Then again this is just my opinion.

Ruggedness and relaibility are first rate, accuracy is not so hot. They make a good hunting rifle , and most can keep minute of coyote out to 250-300 yards, but they seldom give minute of angle groups.

Price is also a factor- the Mini 14 uses to be half or less the price of an AR system rifle. Now, I think that it is higher than some of the plain AR set ups, and closing in on the mid to upper range AR rifles.

One possible factor to keep in mind, is that the Mini 14 does not look like a "black" rifle, and so may be a bit more socially acceptable in some areas. That may or may not matter to any given shooter, but is worth being aware of.

As G1 said the price of a Mini 14 has risen in recent years and a good AR can be bought or better yet pieced together for less money with better accuracy.

Have you looked at the mini-30? 7.62x39 round and better accuracy than the 14. The base price is a bit higher but not prohibitive.

Much more rifle for the money than the mini-14, IMO.

Depends on what you mean by cheap, I guess. Mini-14s used to be in the $300 range back when I shot one 20 years ago. Now I think they're closer to $650 or so.

I don't remember them being any more accurate than my Russian SKS, which I paid $139 for. But even now I think you can still score a decent Russian SKS for around $250-300

I bet you can find a used AR for not much more than the Mini14 and be happy. You can do a lot more with the AR than the mini like hit the target, mounting optics, lights, etc...

Also, you should compare mag prices. Brand new GI (milspec) 30rd AR mags are <$10 each.
