    Default Worn drivetrain

I haven't looked at my drivetrain in months (that was a mistake) and decided to replace the chain (I knew this was coming...)

Look at the gaps in the chain rollers. Whoa!

We recently had a discussion about chainring wear: Have a look at the middle ring on mine:

    Shark fins:

So there's going to be a new chainring and probably a freehub body replacement on my XT hub...

That how ever is a beautiful set up w the Ortliebs and all. Nice pic.
Thanks, it does fine with weight for me. I did swap out the rear cassette and deraillure for a mountain bike one with lower gearing though.

that middle chain ring damn near vampiric looking. wow! Yeah, goes to figure that yer cassette / free wheel might need some lookin at too. At least you did this BEFORE the tour. High way robbery can still be found, in small town bike shops. They know you need it...

I might look for a steel replacement chainring.

the only steel ones I know of are the 3 in 1 (48/38/28) that they put on the wallmart bikes.
one +? is that they are based on the sqare axel BBs. so, pretty standardized. But, I prefer a 50 or 52 on my high end and you just cant swap out one ring on those sets as they truly are welded / riveted together as a set. There MIGHT be other options, but, I am running w a Specialized set on my LHT and no probs, and I ride HARD and with a ton of weight.

Surly makes them, but I have heard mixed reviews. I ended up digging a spare ring up from my parts bin. Working much better today.

Well, despite my better half telling me for the third time that I am allowed to buy a LHT, I didn't feel right spending that much on a bike in my financial situation (if it wasn't for my Sallie Mae student loans... but that's another rant altogether). But my bike is too small, it's been getting to my knees and hips (I have hemophilia and have to watch wear on my joints) my mother and wife told me that I should get a new bike.

So after not finding anything really promising on Craigslist, I just ordered a brand spanking new Windsor Tourist for half of what I originally planned to spend on the LHT:

Wish me luck. I'll let you know how this experience goes for me.

I also ordered fenders, a front rack, and a Wald 139 basket. I'm pretty excited. I did a LOT of reading. It sounds like most people have had good experiences with this bike. I'll need to check the tension on the wheels before I get it put together, but I have some confidence in my ability to do this.

I'm glad I'll have a bike that fits before my C&O canal ride in May.

We've been dabbling with this very subject off and on, and Red Bull started a vid series on it. Here's the first vid, I'll update the thread as the vids are released.

You probably know that this model of the Windsor is a clone of the previous iteration of Fuji's touring bike. Others are probably going to disagree with me, but I think I'd make the exact same choice. There are some perceived quality differences between the parts. If you ride it hard, eventually you'll need to be replacing stuff. You can put the money you saved into a bicycle repair account. I actually have one of these in my budget so that I don't have to buy parts on credit card. When something breaks, upgrade.

I replace shimano hub parts sort of quickly (the freehub on my new XT rear is already crapping the bed--this is my 4th freehub replacement in 3 years...weak sauce Shimano), so I guess I at some point started to see parts like toilet paper.

The frame differences in my opinion come down to 2 things: 1) LHT is a 1 1/8 head tube. Some people say this is more durable, just like Fisher said the 1 1/4 was more durable about a decade ago. The truth is that any size is durable enough and the 1" has compatibility with some great quill stems that make great riding positions possible.

The rear spacing of 130 on the Windsor means that theoretically the rear wheel has more dish in it and might be weaker. But if you actually do the math, a 135 on the LHT has a somewhat similar amount of dish. It's not like either is a Comotion 145mm dishless rear. Plus, if it really bothers you, you can cold set 5mm and make it 135 with 4130. I've gone from 126 to 135 and ridden thousands of miles on it (literally).

I'm not sure, but it's a lot with a fat guy and his gear. +some with 2 kiddos in a trailer.

Before I refurbished the Miyata I had a touring frame with one of those nice lightweight ISIS bottom brackets. After a couple years of pulling the kids in the Burley I sheared the hollow axle in the sealed bearing unit in half. I should have kept the pictures since nobody believes me when I tell them about that. Yes, it probably was a flaw in the steel.
