    Default canvas pack question

What is the weight of the canvas that the wax canvas packs are made from?

I'm considering making a pack that sets on a pack frame. Not sure what I'm working up in my head yet I'm still in the pondering stage at this point.

    thanks for the help.

To get some good ideas go to Duluthpacks.com They use 15 oz and I believe a few are 18oz. canvas. They sell both waxed and unwaxed.

    Thanks,
I've drawn up a pack design and the Mrs. is going to sew me up a prototype with a painters tarp then if it turns out we'll get some 18oz and try to sew up a good one. We'll see.

    Pics please!

I will be trying something similar. I found plans for a canoe pack and will be making it as soon as I can get a good piece of drop cloth.

Good looking step by step. I'll get Pics up when the Mrs. gets to sewing, I'm not allowed in the sewing room much less near her machines.

I guess I'd better ask Santa for a machine for Christmas this year.

I am not sure what weight it is but I have bought drop cloths @ 2 for $ 13 from home depot and made several canvas bags / packs from them among other things. They seem durable to me.

I do double thickness the bottom or put a piece of leather on the bottom.

My work is of course obviously home made, and with surplus canvas miliatary packs so cheap I tend to use those.

I haven't really worn any of them out past the ability of a field repair kit to put back in service.

I have been thinking that a set of straps from some web gear with the padding might be an interesting modification.

Of course I use a fairly light / small pack for a week long walk about. Over the years I seem to just not need to carry as much as I used to think i needed.

The most important walkabout things I think is a good knife and good footwear. Most anything else can be made do or use what I have.

You might make a trip to the junk yard and get a couple of seat belts for straps. I picked up a couple brand new ones at the surplus RV center for $8 each including buckles.
