I use my smart phone, but this thread has me wondering now. A good camera would be much better and I wouldn't have the risk of dropping my phone in the river!

I take my DSLR on all trips, whether it's canoeing or hiking. I always carry a tripod too. My new ride is a Nikon D600, which replaced my Nikon D200, what a welcome upgrade that was.

This was taken with my new camera using the black card technique. And I'm not a fan of neck straps so I put this wrist strap on.

I recently got an olympus tough tg620 and it is a great camera. It takes very good photos and has alot of great features. It is compact and light to. And it is around 180 dollars. I really like it.

I agree with Bill Cox (first post), Canon really nailed it with the Canon SX40HS; 35x optic zoom and 4x digital (that's 140x zoom guys, that's incredible). There is a quality "stabilization circuit" built in, so no "shake" or "fuzzies" on the image even at 140x.

I had a Pentax SLR, but felt like a traveling salesman with his sample case, carrying around the extra lenses and screw on filters. I went through several vintages of the various "compact", one-shot cameras. They were great for size (fit in pocket), but had poor picture quality because of small lens aperture size (don't let as much light in). I help justify going back to a larger camera body because: 1.) there are no extra lenses to carry and the filters are built in, and 2.) I've stopped carrying either my binoculars or monocular, since neither can match the zoom on the camera.

Whether you carry a one-shot or an SLR, I recommend you look at the slings made by an outfit called OpTechUSA (http://www.OpTechUSA.com). I picked up a shoulder, or cross-body sling that has 2 moveable slides (like a rifle, TAC sling) for mounting to the camera and the case. When not in use, camera is at your side or you can carry behind your hip, like a sling bag. Grab the camera for use and the slide moves up the strap. Take off the case and let it fall; case drops to "rest" position at hip, while camera is still in ready position (I picked up one of their neoprene, soft body pouches that I use when camera's on sling).

Iphone for 90% of my pics and a Cannon Rebel SLR for the better ones.
