Default Ss usgi canteen cup questions.

Do you guys know what this paint looking finish is on this ss usgi canteen cup? I just got it from wardens surplus from Ohio and I tried to clean it off to see if it would wear off but it doesn't..any thoughts about it? Is it safe? Is it normal?

    Yep..all good.

All the issue ones from the 90's on up have that finish. I've never seen one "wear" off. You can scratch it as you have seen from the outside.
It Don't matter where I'm at cause right now I sure ain't here.

If you want you can sand it down with sandpaper and take off the grey coating. Just be forewarned it is a pain in the butt or at least it was for me. I used 320-1500 grit sizes. I will try to post a picture later when I get home from work.

I don't think it is a 'coating' per-se. More like the stainless steel was given a matte finish at the factory.

Looks the same as the Crusader cup finish to me, mat stainless.

Will soon go black on the outside if used on a stove or fire, and coated with coffee & tea tannin on the inside if used for drinks...

None of these stains comes off easily, so I guess stainless means 'won't rust'... but hey! this is a bulletproof A1 utensil, that will last years...

Its not like your gran's silver that needs polishing!!!
    cheers
