I believe this will be the new normal, for a while to come.

The Walmarts around me are always bare or very limited in any handgun ammo. And that was before recent events. I usually don't bother to check anymore.

I actually had a conversation about this recently with some buddies. Because its been the case for more than a while (at least around me) we tended to agree it may be more an issue of Walmart either not caring to keep/order reasonable amounts or quietly moving to stop selling it altogether.
Life is not the way it's supposed to be...it's the way it is. The way we cope with it is what makes the difference.

Walmart in my area has an enclosed area where they keep the ammo locked up. My last two trips there, there wasn't even one box of anything in there. I asked an employee, and they said someone broke the case, so they took everything out. They are either taking their time fixing it, or they are lying. I expected the 223 and 7.62x39 to disappear, but 22's??? The only thing I can find is CCI Stingers, and of course they cost as much as a box of 9mm. Everyone is freaking out. I overheard a guy in the one gunshop I was in say he has spent $11,000 in the past month on guns and ammo. All of the online places I order from are on backorder for months.

My Walmart doesn't even carry .22 ammo outside of 50 rd boxes. Last time I checked they were low/sold out of pistol and rifle ammo and had a large amount of shotgun shells in 20 rd boxes or whatever it is (I usually buy the bulk packs). They never had more than a half dozen 50 rd boxes of .22 at any given time, but they've been selling everything quickly lately. Stopped selling rifles and shotguns about 14 years ago.

Our local Walmart usually stays pretty stocked up. Of course I live in the sticks where everyone hunts. It's usually the cheapest place to buy ammo. They have everything from 50 round individual boxes to the bulk packs, 22 caliber on up to various high powered rifle calibers. They just recently started selling the cheaper Russian stuff too.

I don't blame you Scott, I bought from them once and will never buy another weapon from them, haven't been in there for years, figured if you were in a pinch they might have some ammo.good luck to you.

Most people shoot more .22 than any other caliber
    and
I dont know anyone who reloads .22

So kinda makes sense to me that they sold out as quickly as the rest

There is something more than just panic buying going on here. I bought two bricks of .22 ammo for a friend for Christmas mid-Dec (had to go to several stores to find any) and between then and this past Saturday I haven't seen any bricks at all at any of about a dozen stores that usually have some.

Talked to a guy that's expecting a couple of cases of Remington Thunderbolt this week but he's going to be breaking the bricks and selling individual boxes of 50 (limited to 200 rounds per customer) until those are gone. Something more going on than just nerves.

Usually there are plenty of 22's to go around. When a similar situation happened 4 years ago, there wasn't any issues with finding 22's. Now any ammo is hard to find, unless it's high dollar stuff.
