The other nice thing about the Handi rifle is the ability to change barrels down the road if you end up hunting out west or up north.
You can shoot down every MiG the Soviets employ, but if you return to base and the lead Soviet tank commander is eating breakfast in your snack bar, Mack, you've lost the war

    308. Either one will perform well. You do realize the 270's parent case is the 30-06. If I were in your shoes, I'd go 308. There is a lot more variety ammo-wise. Practice and plinking ammo can more easily be bought in bulk with the 308.

Like I said, that was one of the things that made me decide on the Handi... I am defiantly going to be getting a 12 Ga barrel for it after I get it(if I can decide which one I want... they got a lot of options for the 12) and probably am going to be getting a couple more rifle barrels down the line...

I love the .270, but my handi rifle is a .308. It is a freaking tack driver!!!!! I think you'll have a wider variety of loads with the .308.

The first Handi Rifle that I found after finding out about the barrel accessory program was a .243, with the SB2 receiver and the correct serial number prefex (means I could order barrels).....but I was looking for and wanted the .270 as the ballistics are very similar to a 7mm mag (smaller bullet, less enegry, but still very similar).

Wanted a short barreled 7mm mag, but they don't make one in the mag, as it reqiures a long barrel to get up to speed....So, .270 was my answer.

Before even shooting the .243, I sent off the reciever with an order for the .270 barrel, (as well as a bunch more, ...hey as long as they had it anyway, might as well get a few more, right?)

Actually still don't have a .308 barrel......never liked that caliber, but that's just me.

As noted The Handi Rifle does give you the option of additional barrels at very reasonal cost....so is a good choice in my book.

BTW, the handi rifle goes out more that the 7 mag, because it's.....Handi?....LOL

if they offered 7mm mag in a Handi rifle, I would choose that, hands down... my dad loves that round, and after borrowing his this last season, so do I... only round I have ever seen literally drop a deer where it was standing...

Yeah, well noted....I getting too old to chase wounded deer, pulling the trigger and watch them fall over has become the standard with the 7 mm mag.

You won't see a short barreled 7mag, though.

H&R/NEF does offer a 7mm-08, but haven't really been excited about this round.

.308 is very useful to alot of people, but if given a choice, I would prefer 30-06.....as being more versatile in loading and not quite so 'twitchy" as the .308.......Just an opinion with my personnel experiance guys.....Not trying to start anything.

I like 308, and have a couple, but voted for the 270. Right now all over Oklahoma you can find 270 ammo but not a round of 308 to be had. I added 30-30 and 30-06 to my collection about a year ago and am glad for it. You can't find 223 or 308 anywhere around here right now., yet I am still adding boxes of 30-30 and 30-06. What I am seeing is anyone that has a 270 and a 38/357 could by plenty of ammo

I'll echo the fact that there isn't any .308 ammo on the shelf right now. This is something I would think long and hard about.
