I suspect that felt recoil is subjective to an individual.
I like my .45 long colts and .44 mags.
If one goes with top end loads in the ruger (it is very strong action so can handle some pretty impressive stuff) Bought corbon or buffalo bore the recoil in a .44 can be up there with the .454 and such.
Grips also impact it, again JMHO.
Of all the handguns I have fired a S&W 4 inch .357 with full house loads seems to have a sharper sting than the .44 and .45 but again just what I feel.
No doubt that a .44 mag and reloading will give one a range of options that few other handguns can offer. Low power clones of .44 special or just use .44 special, up through heavy for caliber bullets at max power for very large game.
I'm pretty sure the .44mag has taken just about everything from rats at the dump with shot shells up through elephants. (now elephants would be some kind of scary with .44 IMHO)
I have fired a .458 lott (Like a longer case .458 win mag) and the recoil from that is truly something that will wake you up and move you back, but hard as it hits, if I faced dangerous game I guess I would not notice it, esp. breaking a charge.
For basic self defense I prefer a 1911 in .45 acp, but for all around it is almost impossible to fault a good ruger blackhawk in .44 or .45 lc
I have been thinking that a .45ACP using full moon clips would let me focus a lot of my simple reloading on just the one caliber, then switch to the heavier cartridges for when needs call, but I always love a good single action.
Good Luck, it's a great handgun. I have had the same one for 20 years. I had mine shortened to 5 inches and Magnaported. It was an idea I got from reading an article on how Hank Williams customized his Super Blackhawk. I also put black packmyer grips on. When walking in bear country I load with Federal Premium solid hunting loads.
Hard to beat a SBH, I've taken a pile of deer with them over the years!

Sweeet! Nice to pair with a lever-action trapper carbine!
Just picked up my first hand cannon right before Christmas, ended up getting the SBH 44 mag with a 4 5/8" barrel. I was a little intimidated on the first trigger pull ( 300 grain Hornady JHP ) but the gun just rocked back in my hand. My lord did I fall in love, 50 something rounds later and it was still comfy to shoot, still have the stock grips on her, I fonded a few with the Hogue grips and didn't really like the feel so no changes to the grip in the future, I did however get a fiber optic front sight installed on her just recently and picked up some 240 grain hard cast hand loaded from a buddy who has been reloading these for quite some time ( he says they are pretty hot ) so hopefully I can get out and try the new sights and handloads out this weekend.

Yep. 3-4" ironsight groups or less @100 yards with hand loads (if I do my part).
Super Blackhawks are probably the finest-shooting, toughest & well-balanced heavy hitters going.
I've had mine for over 20 years now & used it on everything from wild boars to dispatching the occasional nuisance 'gator or rattlesnake one tends to encounter while out hunting here in Florida.
Mine's also got the 7-½" barrel, which makes it an accurate shooter with very little felt recoil thanks to the extra weight.
