I did something similiar with a pouch that was a little too deep for my compass, but I pinned one end of the cloth to the top of the pouch with a safety pin so that I just had to pull on the opposite end of the cloth to "raise" the compass out of the pouch. Putting the compass back in was as simple as dropping it back down in the pouch... just make sure the loose end of the cloth is not down in the pouch first. Cloth is still removable for use elsewhere, and safety pins are always handy, but you don't have to worry about forgetting to put the cloth back.
