Pendernale ( That might be spelled wrong) Falls State Park has a good primitive camping set-up.

4-C's trail thru the Big Slough area of the Crockett Nat. Forest (between Crockett and Alto Tx) is awesome. Wintertime area. In the Spring or summer the skeeters will make you anemic! North end of the trail is on the Angelina river not far from the Davis site (Caddo Mounds state historic area). South en at Ratcliff Lake. We used to do lots of total immersion 18th century scouts on this trail. One year we paddled in on the river for a primitive deer hunt....

    Google it!

There are several state parks in the DFW area. Only problem is gathering wood in them is against the law. The LBJ grasslands are located northwest towards Denton and Decatur. They are your best close bet. The national Forest down by Houston are next. Counties generally control burn bans, so decide which direction you want to go and check the counties webpage to see if they are under one. If fire isn't much of a concern, and you just want to go camping, any state park will do.

With all the dead and dying trees across Texas right now (from the drought of the last 2 years) be careful.
