    Default Winter Overnighter 1/19/2013

For my birthday this year a few friends and myself decided to try out our rendition of the Kochanski Super Shelter on an overnighter. The rest of the gear was minimal. For the shelter we used:

    8x10 heavy duty tarp
Mylar emergency blanket (duct taped to the underside of the tarp)
    12x9 2mil plastic drop cloth
    2 bungee cords
    5 tent stakeS

We also attached another tarp to the side to make a small vestibule to store gear, as the forecast called for snow/rain.

The day started out nice, temperatures in the 40s, and we spent most of the day gathering and processing firewood. After the sun went down, so did the temperature (drastically)the wind picked up and gusted up to 40mph at times, but the shelter held up, and stayed quite warm. The fire pit in frot of the shelter was maybe about 5'x2' and the long fire made the shelter quite cozy. At one point a buddy of mine put too much wood on the fire, and the temperature in the shelter became so unbearable that we had to step outside of the shelter, and we had more problem being too warm than being too cold. I'm the one making the odd face at the prospect of chili aftermath in the shelter that night.

I recommend this style of shelter highly. I do believe this will be my winter shelter of choice, well, until I can afford a kifaru mega tipi or something similar. Here are just a few pictures from the outing:

Great stuff. Always wanted to try one of those.
