Wow. That is craftsmanship. One screw up and you start all over. He never even seemed to make a misplaced strike. May have done it a time or two.
That's what is great about the pole lathe. You go so slow you can just work stuff down bit by bit. Rules change just a bit at 3K rpm.
This guy is a true artist though. I love guys like this. There isnt any " I dont know how to make that" more like "Okay lets figure this out" kind of attitude.

His lathe is similar to the one used on the Woodwright's Shop on public television. If this interests you go to that website and view the episodes where he uses it.
I'm in the process of building a pole lathe right now out of lumber. I hope to build a log one out in the forest next summer and do some turning outdoors. Great video!

This is based on Underhill's design, the best plans I found were in a book called The Frugal Woodturner by Ernie Conover.
