I used poplar with a red mahogany stain. I know it's not the best wood for a heavy kicker, but I wanted something that wouldn't be to difficult to carve for my first time. Just have to wait and see how it holds up over time.

Before I came off as a jerk I wanted to ask about the wood. You did a beautiful.job of carving but between poplar, 7mm mag, and the grain at the wrist, I would watch the grip area VERY closely as it is likeky to go at some point and here is why. This is alsa lesson in why GOOD gunstock blanks are expensive.

Those lines are the grain and that wood is weak for two reasons.

The light and dark are the early spring wood and the summer late wood. Those are very wide which means that tree grew fast, factory farmed. So old growth with have paper thin lines and later second cut will be less close. The closer the lines the more strength. Poplar isnt that strong to begin with.

More critical is the orientation of the grain. Yours "runs off" at the wrist, which is not good. You want the grain to run from the butt straight through the grip up into the forend.

Now wood is funny, that thing may be ornery and just to make me look foolish may last forever. I am just relaying how a stockmaker would look at that stock.

How did you go about inletting? I'm really considering carving a new stock for my old bolt 22 as nobody makes aftermarket ones and the factory one is terrible even after shaping.
If it was comparable, I'd just consider bedding the heck out of it, it's a really ruff cut and loose fit.

Michael- thanks for the info! I assumed it might not be the best selection, or anywhere near it. But if it cracks, well, i'll have just as much fun making another out of better wood having learned all the more.

Swiss-I did most of the carving using a dremel, flex shaft attachment, and various wood carving attachments made by dremel (along with some chiseling and drilling). I took measurements as best i could with a digital caliber and worked slowly, fitting it as I went, and also pulled out all my training from my college life drawing classes.

I made a longer stock with a higher comb height for my H&R 12 gauge. The pull was too short and the barrel did not line up right for me. The stock and forearm are made from air-dried walnut.
