tracking kit contents
what would you guys recommend to put in a simple tracking kit... I am making up one in a small belt case (meant for cell phones) I picked up at TSC... so far I have a pocket sized book on tracks, a rite in the rain notepad, pencil, compass, measuring tape, flashlight, and a monocular... any other items I should consider?
Sounds like a nice kit. It may be a good idea to buddy it up with a psk, just in case.
If you have the room, it is sometimes nice to have a few small stiff stakes like from bicycle spokes cut in half or something similar. I put some florescent orange duct tape on the ends for better visibility. These are great to mark the ends of each track found. Easier to make measurements and also nice to step back and get a visual feel for what the animal was doing. I hope that made sense.

You tracking animals or men? Flagging tape is a good thing to have.

Its fun sometimes to bring a bag of plaster of paris, some water, and a tray to mix it in to make some track molds
A stick with gradients marked on it, saves you getting the tape out all the time which can prove to be a pain in the a$$ sometimes.
Easiest way is to tie a couple of turk's head knots that can slide up and down the stick. That way you can keep checking gait for right versus left, etc. Helps with determining injury or fatigue. I was going to mention the stick thing, but was beat to it....Originally Posted by hog

I was just jokin' about the Tracker knife.
Will you be taking a camera? You could get a small travel shampoo bottle, then fill it with crushed brightly colored chalk. You can fill the track with the powder, giving you a good contrast so track will show up better in pictures.
