Default how/where do I find Chaga????

Just like the title says, how do I find it? I know to look on birchbark trees. Is it there year round? I live in Ohio, would chaga grow here? Theres not a whole lot of birch trees just growing wild around here. I wanna find some and try it out to see what all the hype is. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

It's a fungus and is on the the tree all year. You will find it more on trees near water like near steams and rivers. It is not only on Birch trees...

Mostly birch white and silver near water easier before leaves come out. Allot of times tree will be in distress. Also look for horse shoe fungus. Much easier to find. Chaga is hit or miss. You may find it easily or it may take a while but it is fun hunting it.

It grows year round on Birch trees. Look for a large black mass usually growing out of an old wound. In some cases its breaks off rather easy and in some cases you need a baton or hatchet. Its always wet when you find it. It takes a while to dry out. The softer sponge stuff is the best for fire pistons the harder stuff I use with a magnifying glass or with bow or hand drills. Once you find it you will see it everywhere.
