Found this on the shelf today at the book store. I must say it really gives Backwoodsman a run for their money.

Yes, it was on the pricey side at $9 and change. But I'll be buying it again.

This is the first issue it says. It covers the whole spectrum from an article on Kephart, to mountain men, building a cabin, reflector stoves, fire starting and so on.

I'd like to see it too. How much of it is advertising? Are any articles written by regular folk?

Not too much advertizing, just about right I would say.

And I'm not sure about regular folk writing, but the articles are very well written. And all photos are in color.

Funny thing is they throw around the term "bushcraft" throughout the mag a lot. I would bet money some of the writers are members here or at least lurk.

I am going to take a look around tomorrow. There are 3 bookstores within a 45 drive from me, so I will see if I can find it here.

I just looked it up on Google and this thread is already the #3 hit.

Looks good there aren't many mags I will even flip through now days some how the writing is dominated by the same little group of adventure traveler guru types and reeks of the I learned this on the Internet and will present it as a expert and or I took a few guided trips and had people feed me for nothing, so this is how you Survive in the Jungle cause I ant no wussy lol...In other words good find hope it stays good and don't turn into SUV add and the mag is a success.I like the idea of getting Mags there has just not been anything good out in a long time

Picked up a copy on Friday - here's what I know

The magazine is published by Harris Publications, 1115 Broadway, NY,NY. Stanley Harris is listed as publisher, F.W. Demara is listed as editor. A Nancy Tappan is listed as a managing editor - wonder if she is related to Mel Tappan?

Haven't read the magazine, been too busy with Christmas stuff. But it looks good. Broad spectrum of articles - Appleseed Project, Mountain Man Medicine, an article about taking care of yourself after a woods accident (in this case, a deep cut on a finger while hacking on a chunk of deer meat in the backwoods), tin cooking comeback...it will have a lot of appeal to many folks on this site.

I hope it does do well. Initial offering looks like it would be good to scouts, bushcrafters, backwoodsmen....and speaking of the last group, I do not think that this will hurt Charlie Ritchie's magazine. Homemade, homespun, folksy writing appeals to a lot of us. I renewed my subscription to Backwoodsman same day I bought this Frontiersman magazine. Becauze I hope this movement becomes successful. I think people involved in these types of activities and self-paced learning are not only resourceful, but have good character in general as well.

Enough said. From me, that is.

I went to the neighboring county to pick something up at K-Mart, and they didn't have it. So I went to Books-a-Million and they didn't have it. I hit the next county and Barnes & Noble had about 8 copies on the shelf, so I picked one up. This is a pricey magazine, but also a bit more substantial than others I have perused.

I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but will get to it tonight.

Don't mind spending the money if it's worth it. And this one is looking good. Not like the new American Survival Guide which really was a disappointment and waste of the fund's

I just went to a Barnes and Noble and they didn't have it. Although they did have a lot of other garbage that I had to look past and move around. Not that I need anything else to read anyways, I need to just get outside and stop reading about it, haha.

According to Wikipedia they also publish New Pioneer. There is no mention of American Frontiersman though. They did publish Country Almanac, which ceased publication in 2006.

Fine print on the bottom of their publishing page in the magazine itself:

Looks like it is an annual publication, so probably will not get terribly popular since it won't be in the forefront of readers' minds every month, or even quarterly like New Pioneer. Actually, come to think of it, I didn't see New Pioneer when I was up there. I did see Backwoodsman and Backwoods Home though.

I can't find a website for New Pioneer either, but there is a Facebook page for it. If you want to subscribe they provide a link. When you go to it, there is no American Frontiersman though. They publish 75 magazines, but they aren't on this order page.

    https://secure.harris-pub.com/harris-tactical-group/annuals/2012/

These folks might want to take some marketing classes.

New Pioneer started out annually I think then went quarterly and I had someone get me the new issue and they couldn't find it anywhere in Anchorage. Maybe this magazine is going to replace it

I called several B&N's in my area to no avail. Just left a message at the phone number for this site

    http://www.survivalblog.com/2010/07/odds_n_sods_1563.html

and they asked for which past publications you were looking for. I asked for both the New Pioneer and the American Frontiersman issues. I will post my findings hopefully when they call back.

So I got a call back today and this is what I found out. The New Pioneer and American Frontiersman is the same magazine renamed to the latter. There are 4 previous publications/issues of the New Pioneer and The current and only to date American Frontiersman posted in the OP. They are basically a semi-annual publication. The issues are available for 11.50 each. I went and ordered all 5 and will let you know when they arrive. If anyone else is interested just call 212-462-9536 and leave a message.

Thanks for the heads up, Skab. And thanks for tracking down a phone #, DCM.

Looks like a great magazine. If I'm not mistaken the cover art is Paul Calle who is one of my favorite Mountain Man artists.:dblthumb: That makes it even more attractive.

For those interested in the older The New Pioneer issues, I just wanted to give an FYI....the I have the 2012 TNP and it is more geared towards homesteading type of information than bushcraft and outdoorsmanship as the American Frontiersman seems to be...i.e. off grid living, salvage an old barn, farming/gardening stuff. Now mind you I love the issue and browse it frequently...I just wanted to let folks know that I think they took a different direction as opposed to just changing the name of the publication.
