    first tries

i made some whistles from scrap antler... and they sound nice and different, i tried to make a 3in1 whistle 1st pic but the 1hole was to narrow for it to work so i cut it out,but i have some other plans for the second hole also;), the big one i made it to look like i flint-knapped it but is not:p , and the last is a tip of antler

trek , just play with the insert piece more make some different wood pieces and cut the flat part out in different sizes until you get a clean good loud sound AND make sure that the piece is not to long on the interior : like you have it : on yours, it has to be flat with the cuts so you can't see it hanging out...that much it will affect the sound

    up close pics

here are some up and close pics of an antler whistle that i borough from a friend and he has it on his key chains for at least 30 years , it should be easy to copy ... for the round air escape hole use a round file to make...for the insert piece some softwood...after is done can be finished with sandpaper...

    Need some advice on this

I finally got around to trying this whistle. Can't get a sound of any kind. I don't know how critical the depth of the sound hole is, or the depth of the notch in relation to the hole. I tried a beeswax "reed", and nothing...
Anyone successful with this (Hey, Gaga!) might have some words of wisdom for me?
(I failed the willow whistle merit badge in Scouts, too, so whaddaya expect?)

I made a whistle with similar ideas out of bamboo. The antler whistle looks WAY cooler. I am going to have to try it out.

    Thanks!

I have a bunch of leftover antler that I thought was too small to make any use of, now I can put them to good use. Nice job mate.

Great idea!!! I tried my hand a few years ago at PVC flutes and clay ocarinas so maybe I will be more successful at antler whistles. Now to find where I put my antler pieces....

I made a couple of these today while I was out in the shop. Great idea and neat use of the leftover pieces of antler I had laying around.

    Thanks,

I had two miserable failures, so far. The video, unfortunately, showed more of his face, than what he was doing. I'm going to try again, as I really want a couple of these. I think my problem is that I've cut the notch too far into the drilled hole.
    Any advice would be welcome!!!!

I had one failure, I'll work on that again later. The first one I got to work failed at first, then I drilled the hole deeper. That one works better than the other one I got to work.

Thank you! I have a ton of antler tips I was tempted to throw out a number of times. Now I know what to do with them. And the idea of putting a ferro rod on the other end is brilliant!

I got lucky. One of the ol' boys at the Rendezvous primative camp had one hanging around his neck. Got to inspect it up close, and listen to it, and get some tips from him. Now I'm fired up to try again.

This is what I came here looking for. 1st one finished except glueing reed in. This tip came off of an old shed, the tip had been chewed by mice, the antler is bleached out to almost white. I started with this old shed in case it didn't go well but I like the looks of it. Any suggestions on finishing it? They will be given to kids so will probably develop a pb&j type patina if left as is. Thanks Gaga.
