I got a cool idea at work yesterday. Since the winter is almost upon us and most of us will have a little more free time in the shop, what if we had a homemade/Bladescroungers knife build-along swap?

    It would work like this:
Anyone interested would make a knife completely out of scrounged materials (steel, and handle materials)Pins/bolts could be bought at the hardware store as well as scrounged. Anyone participating would enter by posting 'I'm in' and post up a build along with pics by editing their 'I'm in' post as they go. To keep the thread organized everyone would keep their build along to a max of 10 pics which is the max allowed in one post.

Once done, everyone would trade their completed knife with another participant.

It could be a fun thread to watch as well at take part in and anyone can participate. No special skills required, It could be your first knife or your 1,000th knife.

What do you guys think? Anyone interested?

    Edit:

The deadline to sign up is now set for December 1st,
The deadline for participants to complete their projects is February 1st.

    Updated rules:
Any materials sources allowed. Precision ground stock, kit knives, micarta, etc are permitted.

Sheaths are not required to go with knives but if you would like to include a sheath then by all means do so!

I'm In for that, however we should do it like the spoon of the month club and do the matchups ahead of time. Or have a voting system and whoever 'wins' so to speak gets first choice of the other knives?

I also think you should do 10 pic max or one video..

I agree. Let's do 10 pic limit or one video and match ups ahead of time. Maybe have a signup deadline then match up people after the deadline?

i think you should have a sign up deadline. december 1st makes sense. i also think you should have a completion deadline, january 1st makes sense.

i don't think you should do the pairings ahead of time though. i think you should wait to see who actually makes a knife and then randomly pair people together january 1st. that makes it a WHOLE LOT easier if people drop out for whatever reason.

also, what qualifies as "scrounged" steel? does an old kitchen knife, modded and rehandled count as "scrounged"

Let's do that, December 1st is the sign up deadline but let's do the completion deadline on February 1st. With the holidays and such, it can be tough to get time in the shop (at least for me). 2 months gives everyone plenty of time.
We will pair everyone up the week of the knife completion deadline and I'll randomly pair everyone up via drawing names out of a hat (old school haha) to avoid unintended bias and to keep things completely fair.

As far as scrounged steel, it can be an old bandsaw blade, lawnmower blade, handsaw, kitchen knife, pallet banding, scrap tool steel etc... heck, let's just make all materials allowable. Making gear at home is the spirit behind Bladescroungers and that means everything from modding kitchen knives to buying precision ground tool steel and fresh micarta. That gives each maker an opportunity to really set their own goals and to decide how far they wanna push the envelope.

My project for this is gonna be one of my Kingfisher model knives but with entirely scrounged materials. The blade will be from an old coal miner's saw and handle materials will be scrounged as well. I may even try to do the whole thing with basic layman tools just for fun and to see how well I can do without my belt grinder.

Right on. I'm thinking about going the funny way (on the sheath only) and making a super elaborate cardboard and tape sheath, complete with pockets, embedded sharpening stone, retention strap, and dangler. LOL!

Sure man. I can sympathize, up until recently I had been on 60 hour weeks at work for almost a year straight. It makes doing fun stuff impossible sometimes but work comes first.
If you can, cool. If work gets crazy, then we understand :dblthumb:

If we end up with an odd number of participants, maybe pull 3 names at random and do a roundabout thing.
1 sends to 2 who sends to 3 and 3 sends to 1. It all works out in the end.

Caught myself drawing knives shapes that fit in a farriers rasp. And thinking to use that 1/4"thick thuya burl from an old baggamond board...

Good opportunity to try that experimental grind ive been thinking about these last weeks!

i suggest the op set up the trades at random.
maybe pick a random number and add it to your number to see who you send your finished product to. example: if the random number is 7 then 7+1= Blackhawk45hunter sends his knife to Holmesmade.
