Well I was welding up a new anvil today. And when I finished (almost) I had a length of flat stock with a short piece of 5160 welded to the end, left over from a previous knife blank. I decided that, maybe after all this work Ive been doing, maybe now I will be able to get a forge weld to take. So, I heated the bar up and folded it over onto itself. Then I heated again, fluxed the stock where it was folded, reheated and BANG BANG BANG! HOLY COW! It Took!!

So, then I decided to see if I could do it again. I heated the bar and folded it once more. I repeated the previous steps, and.... BAM! It took!

This primal instinct took over and I couldn't stop. Fold, hammer weld. Fold, hammer weld. Fold, hammer weld. Fold, hammer weld. and on and on, Before I knew it I had been doing this for an hour. Mind you, this piece of "Damascus" is only 1/8" x 2" x 1/2" But. it is no less.

To see if it had really made a difference the chemical makeup of the steel, I heated it to critical and quenched it in water. IT HARDENED! A file skates over it, while just behind the forge welds - the file digs right in.

Oh boy. Matt has a new addiction :p I'm going to grind it down and see if I can etch it now. I just had to share it!!

To think, I planned on not doing any forge work today... :31:

    -Matt

I'll take pics but I'm not sure if it will show up with an etch or not as its only mild steel and 5160 not 15n20 and another steel... The high nickel steel is what gives the contrast, to my knowledge. But i'll try it anyway :)

It sounds like I may have a profitable venture here :4:

you guys ever see the sunday morning show, I think it on youtube, about the famous maker, who has the learning disability, but makes kickbutt and high dollar damascus cutlery. He had an oven as big as all get out and a power hammer with a REALLY BIG weight on it.

Awsom! Can you bend the bar without the layers delaminating?

Forge weld some tool steel edges on some cheap axes.

Thanks guys. To give you an idea of how tight the layers are, that blade is 1/4" tall, 3/32" wide, and two inches long.

    Thanks brother.

I'm not going to finish this one. There is a small flaw in it by the start of the tang. I was just messing around when I made this. I'll make some more with nickle steel and 5160 in a larger billet so I can make a useable knife. This was my first try and what I would consider a success.

More steel, bigger piece of steel, more heat, more bang, bang. Make knife, take pictures, then post them.
    I'll do the drooling...

Nice brother. Maybe our hawk ought to be Damascus lol nice job, glad you got out in the shop, and you weren't even going to today.

Happens to me on the lathe. Get to fiddling and all of a sudden a true "one off" pops out looking perfect. Can't wait to see more Damascus!
