I am a smith by trade, and I have made this offer on other outdoor forums and it seems to go well. If you want to learn metal work heres your chance. I offer free classes at my forge in East TN. All we ask is that you bring lunch. I have a spare bedroom at my house for overnight stays, or camping on site. We use a coal fired forge, and all work is done, and taught using hand hammering and hand tools. We don't have a power hammer or anything like that. So if this is something your intrested in, send me a message and we can work out a day/days for you to come on out. We try to limit it to two people at a time due to space and equipment restrictions but we are as accmodating as possible. The shop is near Knoxville tn, and as I said before, I have a spare bedroom avliable to anyone who wants it. PM me for more info.

Thanks. I am a very firm believer in giving back. People have helped me through the years, and I like to try and help others as much as possible. And money should never be a limit to learning, and if I can teach just one person a useful skill, and pass this dieing art on, than all the sweat, blood and burns are worth it.

    Awesome offer!

I live about 5 hours away from Knoxville... definitely worth making the trip. I'll have to talk to my wife and see if she's interested in joining me for such an experience. :D

Spots – That’s a very generous offer… hats off to you.

I don’t have the in-shop space to accommodate giving lessons (nor the spare bedroom for that matter), but I get around New England ,Spring-Summer & Fall, giving blacksmithing demo’s for Scout gatherings, craft fairs and such. It’s amazing how many young people have no idea that something like blacksmithing even exists, let alone its role in the history of this country.

Besides the obligatory pot hooks and trivets, I show people how fish hooks, spear & arrow points and basic agricultural implements where made. Every once in a while I find some enthusiastic youngster (from either gender) who’ll come behind the anvil and try their hand. They’re usually amazed at the results of their own efforts.

I’m glad to see someone promoting the trade and getting people started on a rewarding skill-set… kudos

Do you still do this or know someone who does?

Do you still blacksmith/teach, or know someone who does? I have a son who is turning 16 soon, and all he talks about is learning how to blacksmith. I was thinking about trying to get him some lessons. He is a very shy young man, but he has a high intelligence and a big passion for blacksmithing and crafting. I was hoping that if you didn't maybe you could point me in the right direction. Thanks!

    Blacksmithing

There is an organization at www.abana.org dedicated to preserving blacksmithing. They have affiliate clubs all over the US and many clubs offer classes. The Houston Area Blacksmith Association has such classes. Visit the website at www.habairon.org. You can also learn a lot at www.anvilfire.com or www.iforgeiron.com.

Hello. I saw your post about the free blacksmithing classes near knoxville and I'm really interested! I've always loved the old style trades especially those dealing with metal work. I've always been really creative and artsy since I was young. I'm 18 years old and I would truly love the opportunity to come learn under you. I live in south Knoxville so it would be easy for me to get to you. Please message me back on here or call or text me, whichever you prefer. My number is 865-258-3965 and my name is Drew! I really look forward to hearing from you. Thanks once again!

    Hey there,

Me and my father are really interested in learning how to blacksmith. We would love a chance to come learn and work with you for a weekend. We both live in Knoxville area so it would not be a far trip for us. My name is Daniel. I hope you are still doing this!

This is such a cool offer. Can't believe how many amazing people are on this site.

I'm going to have to settle for YouTube vids when my Whitlox forge arrives up here in WA. If I lived near TN I'd be all over this.
