    Post your skill achievements here.
The how-to and requirements thread can be found here

And remember, guys you know if you half assing it (pardon my language). Like my old drills used to say, if you're half assing it you're only hurting yourself. This is about training that will keep you alive or keep you out of trouble.
I reserve the right to no-go whatever looks like a no-go to me. I'm sure it will upset some but just remember that if you do earn the tab then you won't have slouches in your ranks because of the strict requirements.
So have fun and get it done!

Now for "the way it is" talk.

If it chaps your rear that I might no-go a video you spent all day on, don't enter this course.
Most of all, have fun, practice these skills as hardcore as you can and you'll get more than patch at the end.
That's the way it is and that is all.

    Hope this meets the muster....lol

I had an interesting time. Its hard to tell by the pics, but it rained off and on while I was out, combined with the fact that I only had about 45 minutes of sleep last night on the ambulance. Actually Ive worked 50 hours in the past 3 days. So I was pretty fatigued. Which for once is a good thing, because I think its good to train fatigued sometimes. Teaches you to be sharp when you arent your sharpest. lol Anyways, I was hoping to get some wet fatigued firecraft on, but even though it rained good yesterday, and on and off while I was out, I wanted to get soaked. Didnt happen, but I did use my fleece to protect my prep while it was raining. This is where a good location really shines. That cedar grove really is a dry place when its raining. Still though I did splitwood fire, 3x the prep. One chunk of wood I was using split really tough, and had a spicy scent. Kinda like captain morgan...lol Not sure what it was, kinda reminded me of that sassafras we used in indiana, but it seemed harder. It was nice to get out for a bit after wgettin stomped at work yesterday, and sitting designing and cutting the patterns for the shepards hook hawk and SERE bolo im sheathing. Of course ya cant waste good coals, so I brewed up a cup o Joe and had a cigar. Maybe it will pour on me tomorow. lol

Time for me to be a hardass. Sorry, bro this is a no-go. You have to start three separate fires with the prep you make. I gotta see each fire going.
It's the only way to ensure that people get the idea of exactly what three times the prep is.
Now go get some dad gum rest.

    Good try J.

But, I have to commend Iz for sticking to his guns. We all know Iz doesn't like being a hard ass. But, we can all see this means a lot to him.

Never one to make life easy for myself I decided to combine the making 3 splitwood fires with making a splitwood fire in the rain!
I used some ash, split with a small hatchet and the Helle/Les Stroud Temagami knife, storing the prepped wood under my Ventile smock to keep it dry.
I positioned the fires under a good thick bit of tree canopy to help keep off the rain – but just got bigger drops of rain falling on the fires!
Eventually I got the fires going using a fire steel on some of he finest of feather curls I had prepared and once all three were burning well I combined them into one big fire, brewed up a mug of coffee and relaxed while the fire burned out.
It certainly proved a tough little challenge – first to find a suitable bit of drywood in my soaking woods, then to keep it (and myself!) dry as I prepared it and then getting it all going with a firesteel in the rain….and reviving each little fire as the blobs of rain off the trees tried to put em out again!
It seemed that just as they were all going well then one would get a dousing and need a bit of TLC!
Still – it all worked in the end!

You're a go on your land nav.

I gotta say though it doesn't look like it's raining in your pics. It looks like it had been raining but not raining at the time. I'm not calling you a liar at all so don't get excited. I just need to confirm that it was actually raining at the time you built the fires. You tell me that straight up and it's a go.

    Solo overnighter
I have done too many solo nights out to count!
On my little spot in the local woods - where I have sole user rights :) - I have a little bushcraft home from home.
I built a table and chairs
    [IMG]
    and a fire place
    [IMG]
and I go up there whenever I can
    My normal pitch

    It was raining OK!:)
Not the heaviest of rain I will admit and the trees gave pretty good shelter - but dropped big plodges of water just where and when I did not want them!
I got pretty damp as I was using my jacket to shelter the prepped wood and I found it all a lot harder than normal...

If you're happy with the accomplishment in comparison to Terry's video I posted then so am I. You're a go for fire in the rain and 3x the prep.

    Thanks for that :)
I can see what you mean about the rain not looking too present in the photos and understand your query.
I would hate to undermine your challenges with any thoughts that someone has got through by "cheating" or doing things the "easy way" - that is not what the challenge is about.
I will definately be leaving the Bow Drill fire chain until drier weather though - I just do not see it working too well for me in the curent weather!
Keep up the good work :)

To be quite honest - I am not that interested in the patch at the end of it ...it is all about the challenge and the fun! There is no point in taking part if you do not do it full on :)
I will keep posting up my attempts as and when :)

    Nice job J

Nicely done with the ring of fire option! I didn't understand that all three had to be lit either. Thanks for getting that cleared up for us, the hardwoodsman way! You keep posting that Turley like that and I may just have to get on the famous list! Todd

Great job, man. All of those look like a sustainable fire which is the way it should be done.
It doesn't get any better than this example right here, guys.

NOW HEAR THIS: ANOTHER RULE CHANGE

Or modification, whatever you want to call it.

There will be TWO hardwoodsman tabs. One will be the plain one like I posted, the other will have a gold oak leaf beside the Hardwoodsman. The gold tab will be for Videos only. Video is the next best thing to me being there on some of these so they will be held to a higher standard. If you shoot video make sure you don't edit important parts out(like getting an ember). You can speed up the video but don't edit something out that might be important.
Also this whole thing is arbitrary and at my discretion on what gets a go and what doesn't so in that spirit there will be some guys who use still pics that I might award the gold tab to. I reserve that right. If they display all things I think are required in their pics then they will be bumped up.

Now for "the way it is" talk.
If it chaps your rear that video takes precedence over still pics, don't enter this course.
If it chaps you rear that I might bump some guys with still pics up to the gold tab, don't enter this course.
If it chaps your rear that I might no-go a video you spent all day on, don't enter this course.
Most of all, have fun, practice these skills as hardcore as you can and you'll get more than patch at the end.
That's the way it is and that is all.

Here is my entry for fire in the rain. I rained for the last two days and its still raining now...Stuff happens, expect the un-expected! :29:

Fire in the rain. - YouTube

My brother came to the rescue with a spare pair.....about an hour later.
After the fire was established and the video was done. I called Iz while I was still sitting there, and he thought my ordeal was rather humorous!

It must be raining everywhere hahaha.....I was doin some leatherwork when I heard it start raining. I grabbed my kit and took off do do a fire. Used the dark lord sith poncho as rain gear. I was prepping my fire, doin good, and then it turned from light rain and started frickin POURING and thundering. I thought I bit off more then I could chew, but I got her did. It did turn into fire in the rain, and dark pretty quick though..hahaha This one was alot of fun. My oldest boy came out to watch and was laughing his ass off at me as I came up for air under the poncho from time to time while I was working. Check out how dark it got from the first prep pic, to right before I lit it when the rains were really coming down hard.....
