    Heya there, Tim here.

I've always loved nature but was never really taught any outdoor skills. Most around here have a strong heritage of hunting and living off the land. Not me, so I have to figure it out on my own. Thankfully this forum exists. Looking forward to new skills learned.

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge.

    Have a kickass day.

Howdy Tim. Welcome to the forum. A great place to learn, and spend money :) I'm in Salina and have been in the woods most of my life. Give a shout if you want to get together for a camp. In fact, I'm going out this weekend for an overnighter if you want to go. Give a holler.

also what are you looking to learn - things to make GP camping more fun, survival skills, how to make things, car camping, ultralight hiking, how to plan for emergencies and increase your chances of getting home?

Hello and welcome from Washington State. Just starting out this time of year, I recommend starting with shelter. How do you protect yourself from wind, rain, snow and cold?

Welcome from E Central AL. You might want to start with the Bushclass USA section. A great place to learn at your own pace. And I like that the lessons are checked in a sense.

Wow, I think that's the best welcome I"ve ever gotten in a forum.

@1066vit - I'm in the Newton area. I'm pretty familiar with car camping, we actually have a 15 person van that we gutted and we rebuilt as a little camper to take on road trips. Did Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee last year, and almost all of Colorado last year. Really loved the San Juan mountains out there.

As far as what i'm wanting to learn, well I'd like to be able to take little gear with me and thrive in the wilderness. I don't like the feeling of being overly dependent on all the gadgets and such out there. Want to keep things minimal as possible (a bit different than ultralight, IMO). I also want to kick up my emergency preparedness as well. We've got family go bags, plans and such, but have never put any of it to the test.

@DarryIM - I was kinda thinking the same thing. Lucky enough I live on a good chunk of land in town that's surrounded by trees on two sides. Plenty to work with. Figure my dogs won't mind a structure in the backyard as I learn.

@Subdood - the Bushclass is exactly what brought me here. I actually started on it last night, which was good as I've been sitting around the house too much lately.

Thanks again for an awesome welcome.

I know it would be a heck of a drive for ya but I'm hosting a big BCUSA meetup next month if you would be interested in joining us. I believe we're at 13 different states that will be there, some coming from as far away as Texas and Idaho.
Here's a link to the thread if you might be interested.
2017 BCUSA TN. Winter Bushcraft Meet- Feb 23rd through Feb 27th

It's a great opportunity to meet lots of good folks from the forum, learn tons of skills and see more types of gear than you can shake a stick at.

Love String break. We're lucky in that a number of those bands play in the area year round.

Thanks Tim, I'll take a look. I tend to be a bit of a hermit, so I need to get out and meet folks from time to time. Subscribed to your channel as well. Great stuff.

You're very welcome bud! Some health conditions kind of force me to be a hermit too. That's one of the reason I love hosting these meets so much as it allows me to spend time in the woods that I wouldn't otherwise get to do.

Bushclass is a great way to learn new skills - many of which your children/wife can learn & practice right alongside you -- especially since you have plenty of yard to work with.

Kingman State Fishing lake just West of Wichita has some decent free camping areas - and a trail for wandering on.
Kanopolis state lake west of Salina also has some nice easy trails for day trips.
Perry Lake & Clinton Lake have some excellent trails & camping areas, also free.
and then there's the Elk City River Trail west of Independence -- Kansas' own little "practice stretch" of the Adirondack trail.

There are plenty of good folks here on BCUSA in/near Ks, so you should be able to find as much opportunity for meet-ups and/or learning as you want.
