Julia and I planned to do an overnighter at a spot in Wrightwood this weekend. Only to be surprised by a closed gate. So we swung by a Ranger station for some suggestions on nearby places. Shortly after ending up at South Fork- one of the worst places I have camped. Broken glass and trash everywhere. However we didn't want this to ruin the trip, so we decided to camp anyway. It did take us about 2 hours to finally accept it though, lol. This was not our idea of camping, but we stayed positive and made the best of it. It was still a good opportunity try out some new gear, setups, general things to try for the first time.

I only took a few photos this trip, mostly because the place wasn't that visually appealing. It was still better than being at home eating junk food and watching TV though.

I also tried out my Exped Synmat UL 7 for the first time. This trip was by far my most comfortable on the ground. No back pains whatsoever, this was also the first time I had slept undisturbed for this long. Exped get's two thumbs up from me.

Quiet stove Silence for my MSR Dragonfly. Some of you might be familiar with how LOUD this stove is out of the box. It's by far the loudest stove I've ever heard in this size range. However the silencer made a huge difference. The stove itself was also very effiicient- we had it running for 3 hours straight, and only used a 1/4 of the tank.

It may not have been what you set out to do, but it looks like good fun outdoors to me.

When I think back on some of the disappointments I've had on camping trips, those trips were still better than my best day at the office.

    Great pics by the way.

Thanks guys! I'm only whining because it breaks my heart to see so much trash outdoors. Aside from that I had a blast trying new things, and learned a lot in the process.

I may try to juggle between the hike in type of camping, and car camping for the cast iron cooking. Also trying to bring you guys new places, instead of seeing the same locations over and over. :4:

How can 2 thin people like y'all put down so much food?? Geez. :)

That said, how often do you ever get to see a great photo of a Mora next to some homemade donuts. And ridiculously delicious-looking donuts too, I might add.

Thanks for sharing, Mudman. Again, your intriguing photography raises the bar for us BCUSA folk. Cheers!

Thanks for all the comments about the donuts. :)

Great pics, Mud! The location may have been less than ideal, but it definitely helped to be able to make light of the situation and just go with the flow. . .a different kind of adventure. :) Here are some of my pics. . .

Look of despair. . .or is it defeat. . .upon arrival at the campground.

Lots of trash, broken glass, and such. . .I actually put on some gloves and picked up some of the trash around the campsite . . .it was just too much for me. :/

Mud is an intense chef. . .he knows how to cook with bacon grease. :)

It was fun to try out a number of different food dishes. I was jazzed that my new booties kept my feet nice and warm at night - first time I haven't had cold feet while sleeping.

I tried the Exped. . .pretty nice. I used two Z-lites this trip and I am pretty certain that Exped was more comfortable.

I myself enjoy alternating between backpacking---with spartan eating but awesome scenery and wildness---and car (tramp) camping when I can carry the iron Dutch Oven and skillet and enjoy cooking.

Great post guys. I know how you feel about those kind of spots. Slim pickins. But instead of having it easy, you were forced to use your skills in creativity to make it a good time. Plus... Donuts really do make everything better 8)

i thought the pics were great by the way.

I think it's funny that we seem to go camping on the same days. I was just out with Matt and Jay

So basically from what I get out of this is if life gives you lemons...camp and make doughnuts.

    I'm good with that theory.
