    MI May Meet Info Page

I am putting this in this section to keep the details easy to find.
Please don't post discussions in this thread, this only for information.
Post whether or not you are definately coming or tentatively coming.

    When: May 28th-30th, 2010

Where: Island Lake Recreation Area Brighton, MI Organizational Campground.

    http://www.dnr.state.mi.us/Publications/PDFS/RecreationCamping/island_lake_map.pdf

Fees: Camping is $1.50 per person per night. Vehicle passes vary, resident daily is $4/day, Resident annual is $24.

    Directions to Island Lake: http://michigandnr.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/michigandnr.cfg/php/loc/enduser/loc.php?p_locator_page=loc_details_page&p_location_id=85&p_location_rank=1

As always bring enough food for yourself for the entire outing. Others may feel the need to share, or we might just all put something together and sample each others delicacies. But don't count on being fed.

There will be some kind of Trade Blanket:
Bring your stuff you don't use or want anymore, someone can probably use it. Be ready to find that thingy you've been wanting, because someone else will bring it. How this will actually work our is still under consideration. Either it will be place your item on the blanket, and take a similiarly valuable item. Or we will have some sort of Trade Auction. However we end up doing it, we will have lots of fun, and walk away with some new kit.

    Iron Forge:
Several members are planning on bringing a small portable forge, some materials will be available. BUT if you can bring your own, you will guarantee you will have something to work with.

    Fire Building Demonstrations.
Several members are bringing materials to make Bow Drills, Hand Drills and demonstrate how to use them.

    Land Navigation:
There will be a Land Navigation Course taught. Basic map reading skills, compass skills, terrain identification, and 2 courses to test out your new found skill. These courses cover open country, woods, and through the brier patches. Bring your compass with you, it should have degree markings in order to give you an accurate direction. I will have materials to make Ranger Beads for counting off your paces. Detailed maps of the area will be provided.

    Brain Tanning:
One member will be bringing a deer hide that is already scraped and prepared for tanning. Along with the brains to tan it with. He will be teaching us the process to Tan His Hide.

    Tentative Schedule

    Friday Check in is 3pm:
Meet and Greet, set up camps.
Collect firewood from area (there is lots of it). Basic campfire meeting.

    Saturday AM:
    Meet and Greet any newcomers.
Set up camps and Demo areas, we will need help with the set up.

Throughout the day, there will undoubtly be small demonstrations going on, so if you don't have interest in one or the other, there will be plenty of other things to do.

    Saturday Afternoon:
    After Lunch, Brain Tanning.

    3PM:
Land Navigation Instruction and skills demonstrations.

    5PM:
Iron Forge, Topic is knife blank creation.

    Supper Sometime in there.

After Supper will be the Trade Blanket (however we decide to do that).

Ghost stories by the fire, midnight rations, and bedtime stories told by the campfire.

    Sunday:
Random Bushy Demonstrations, a chance for you to re-hash any problems you had the day before.

Fire up the Forge to continue with the blanks.

Pick up camp and Leave by 3PM. There may be a little leeway on this, depends on the Rangers, but all in all they're pretty cool people.

    Shaun (a.k.a Mathan Moloch)

I will teach debris shelter setup (materials permitting). If not quite enough material for cover and bedding, I will go over dimensions and proper depth of debris.

Looking at the site and the time frame, it may be hard to get a debris shelter up, but I can definitely go over how to build it and measurements. We will just be lacking in presence of a shelter. But a frame and leaves isnt hard to visualize.

NOTE: for all that will attend grab some additives you might think would taste well in a camp bannock like rasins, choclate chips, cheese, nuts, sausage etc.

i will be bringing enough bannock mix for us all to try our hand at making some!

I don't know if I'll be able to stay but, would it be alright for me to visit for the day? Sounds like I could learn a lot and meet some good folks.

Love to make it guys, but that is Memorial Day weekend and I'm committed to going to the Feast of St. Claire in Port Huron.

I'll keep my eyes open for other opportunities though!

I'll be a learner at this meet. Lot of very knowledgable guys here.

I'm planning on doing a discussion/demonstration of heat treating a carbon steel bushcraft blade along w/ RandyT. I'll try to bring what steel I can scrounge up for others to work with.

There's about a 100% chance that it'll be on the trade blanket if that entices more to come...
