Okay, so this idea has been brewing in my head for a while, and I'm curious to see if anyone else is interested.

In the high-tech tinkering world, there exists an object known as "The Great Internet Migratory Box of Electronics Junk" or "Tgimboej" for short. The concept behind this is very simple, its a flat-rate box full of parts, and a list of names and addresses. Somehow, your name gets put on the list inside the box, the box is sent to you based on your name being inside. You give and take to the box as you see fit, check your name off the list, and send it to another random person on the list, after adding one(or more) new name of someone who would want to participate. (The name adding and selecting/sending process can be a bit more complicated, but I'll address that in a minute). I've actually received 2 Tgimboej's (nobody really knows how many are out there) and have seen another half dozen or so.

There are some problems with the original concept, one being that the "list" can get really long (I've seen one with 300 pending recipients) and people move, or lose interest. In that case, the box usually "dies" somewhere. Other times, the box gets too homogeneous, full, or gets nearly emptied. All of these can be solved with having a cycle-back point and a central name list, where the box comes back to its point of origin, to be either re-sent with a new list, combined with another box, refreshed/mixed with the contents of another box, or split and sent out as 2 boxes.

My idea is to start a bushcraft version of the box. I'd be more than willing to start one (more later if it goes well, and the interest is there) and serve as the cycle-back point for it. I just want to see if the interest is there, and if the box can maintain some quality before I dive in and start a bunch of them.

As a test run, I think a cycle-back after 10 people should be enough to gauge how things would go on a larger set of boxes out there.

So, the first 10 people with at least 50 posts to say they're in will be the list for the test run. But before you say you're in, make sure you can:

    1. Re-send a large USPS flat-rate box within one week of receipt
    2. Take and GIVE something to the box. (You MUST take at least one item, and must add at least one new thing, though you can do much more of either if it suits you)

Items to add may be finished goods or raw materials (within reason, no baggies full sand)of any value, just take something you can use, give something you can spare.

Other rules for adding (no food, no perishable items....more as I think of them) will be included inside the box.

So that's it. The first 10 to respond will be contacted, and we'll get things rolling. I'm headed to the flea market tomorrow, and I'll be looking for things to start a box with.

Yep, only 10 people for now, so total travel time should be under 3 months (hopefully faster, in a dream world, you send it out as fast as you can)

If it goes well, I plan on expanding to multiple boxes, with each cycling back after 10 people (that number is subject to change, but I think it would be about right).

AMS has done this twice as a fundraiser for the bushcraft scholarship he sets up. His "Goodie Box on the move" got out of hand last time. People were taking nice gear and adding junk and so forth. The rules for it need to be updated. I don't think he thought he had to account for jackholes not being honest. :(

Okay folks, since the response seems to be pretty positive, I'm going to add a second box if enough people are interested.

So as it stands, there will now be 2 boxes, each limited to 10 people.

So now a total of 20 people may participate, but again, each box is 10 people, so travel times will remain the same.

I'd like to participate. Interesting idea. I think you're right in keeping the initial number of folks participating kind of low-- it only takes one to take it all and disappear. Thanks again!

This is a test. If it doesnt go well, it wont keep going. Thats part of the idea behind cycling back. If I think its been abused, I can end it.

That being said, I've actually organized something like this before, and there will be some instructions in each box that have helped reduce that kind of abuse in the past.

I wasn't trying to be negative or discourage, just mentioning. I hope this is successful. As a recipiant of AMS's scholarship I am trying to find a good way to do it again without the same result. I'll be "stealing" your ideas if they work. :D lol

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound defensive. I'm just a bit tired.

Its all good, I know these kind of things can go either way. I figured at worst, I'm out the postage and whatever bit of value I put in to start the things. (I already probably have enough to do 10 if I really sorted through my gear and random materials I have laying around, so I'm not too worried about the value of whatever I send).

    I'm in.

I've had good luck with a hiker box on another site. The box usually contained somthing other people no longer needed but not junk and for every item you took you had to replace it with something of equal or greater value. I got some very nice 8 mm film tins for storing tinder and a nice pot grabber probably total not more than 3 dollars at the flee market but good items too me none the less. I added some ferro rods, and two different knives.

I recall reading the posts on the shcolarship box Grizz that was an attrocity I think you guys had some very valuable items in there that got nothing less than RIPPED I hope for better success in this venture. It is a valuable asset when you can barter with your comunity. Best wishes on this venture to all who participate. Even if I fall off the cut off number!

By my count, we have 4 more spots to max out the second box, so everybody up until this point is in.

4 more people and I'll message everyone for their shipping info. Once I get everyone's info, I'll get things put together, and sent out as quick as I can.

PLEASE NOTE: BCUSA has no control over such pass along events, and cannot monitor, regulate or address any problems.

This sort of pass along box has been done before, sometimes successfully, and sometimes with a great deal of disappointment.

Please be aware this is entirely a private venture with no official recognition by BCUSA. That means we cannot help if it goes bad.

Hey folks, just figured I would give you all an update. I have shipping info from all but 2 people. I've re-contacted them, and am giving them another day or so. If no response by then, I'll put new people in.

Fluke has first dibs on any open spots. I'll put the call out if I need another person.

I'm hoping to get boxes out early next week.

Kayak, I like the anonymous aspect. Are we going to pm the person that is getting it next ? So they can keep an eye out for it. Then if that person doesn't receive it we can track back. I plan to have a tracking number when I send it just to make sure.

A tracking number is like $1.50 extra. Very worth it if you ask me.

The way I'm working this out in my head is that all the tracking/heads up messages of the package goes through me. That way, even though you might know the address the box came from and is going to, you have no idea which member it is.

Basically, there will be instructions in the box saying to message me when you get it, and message me when its sent out (there will be a bit more to it, that works as a self-monitoring system just in case there are issues, but that will all be explained in the box).

Sounds like fun. It reminds me of geocaching because when you find the hidden cache, you open it up and examine the contents. Usually you can take something and then you leave an item. It was always fun to see what others had left behind, especially if the cache had a theme.

Please don't include me, but I'd love to track this thread and find out what everyone gets!

Okay folks, I now have shipping info from everyone, so its just a matter of me getting my act together and getting the boxes out.

My sister gave birth over the weekend, so I'm a little behind where I want to be, and it might take me a bit longer to get them out, but I am working on it.

Okay everyone, the items are all ready, and the order is all set (thanks to my helpful 3 year old niece).

I have to go pick up a pair of boxes tomorrow, and I'll be sending notifications to the first few people to make sure they will be around, then I'll get the boxes out either Tuesday or Thursday.
