I just got a shock. Went to a large WalMart at lunchtime in Frederick, MD and there was no 9mm ammo, only a couple boxes of .40s, one each of .380 and .38 Special AND only 3 boxes of .22s. They've either had a rush on ammo or they are trying to sell out and then stop selling it. Wasn't a clerk around to ask. I hate to have to order and pay shipping.....

Shelves were like that when I went to Walmart in Aberdeen, MD friday. A few boxes of odds and ends and a bunch of No 8 12 and 20 gauge was all they had.

Ammo is hard to find, but your thought that your Walmart might be getting out of firearms is not without merit. All the local ones here gave up their gun departments a few years ago.

I need to get some 9mm dies for my RCBS. Just out of curiousity I checked pistol primers while I was there and they were out of them too.

I couldn't find any 45 acp or 223 ammo in Frederick either. You might be able to contact gunrunners in downtown and see if he has any. Good luck.

We are in the middle of the largest politically-induced panic buy in the history of the United States. One vendor I buy from sold 1.3 million rounds of one caliber of ammo in less than 2 hours. If there is any kind of ammo on the shelf it is by 1) pure luck or 2) they have hiked the price so high that even the most rabid of panic buyers won't pay the premium...yet.

Not getting political and not trying to sound like a jerk, but any gun owner needs to be having their voice heard NOW.

No, I know them also. Not real anxious to do business with them after the last time I was in the Gun Center. I know Gunrunners is on South St.

shelves have been clear of any 9mm and most .40 here in Texas for weeks. I was able to snag the last two boxes of Hornady .40 last week. And forget going to the gun shows these days. We have one here once a month, this weekend they were selling 1000 rounds of .223 for $1,300!

A friend of mine ordered a Ruger 10/22 take down in November, picked it up on Dec. 23 and has only been able to find 4 50 rd boxes since then.

I have been stocking up on ammo here and there since 1985 or so. More so since 2008.

The Walmarts around me are always bare or very limited in any handgun ammo. And that was before recent events. I usually don't bother to check anymore.

I actually had a conversation about this recently with some buddies. Because its been the case for more than a while (at least around me) we tended to agree it may be more an issue of Walmart either not caring to keep/order reasonable amounts or quietly moving to stop selling it altogether.

Walmart in my area has an enclosed area where they keep the ammo locked up. My last two trips there, there wasn't even one box of anything in there. I asked an employee, and they said someone broke the case, so they took everything out. They are either taking their time fixing it, or they are lying. I expected the 223 and 7.62x39 to disappear, but 22's??? The only thing I can find is CCI Stingers, and of course they cost as much as a box of 9mm. Everyone is freaking out. I overheard a guy in the one gunshop I was in say he has spent $11,000 in the past month on guns and ammo. All of the online places I order from are on backorder for months.

My Walmart doesn't even carry .22 ammo outside of 50 rd boxes. Last time I checked they were low/sold out of pistol and rifle ammo and had a large amount of shotgun shells in 20 rd boxes or whatever it is (I usually buy the bulk packs). They never had more than a half dozen 50 rd boxes of .22 at any given time, but they've been selling everything quickly lately. Stopped selling rifles and shotguns about 14 years ago.

Our local Walmart usually stays pretty stocked up. Of course I live in the sticks where everyone hunts. It's usually the cheapest place to buy ammo. They have everything from 50 round individual boxes to the bulk packs, 22 caliber on up to various high powered rifle calibers. They just recently started selling the cheaper Russian stuff too.

I don't blame you Scott, I bought from them once and will never buy another weapon from them, haven't been in there for years, figured if you were in a pinch they might have some ammo.good luck to you.

Most people shoot more .22 than any other caliber
    and
I dont know anyone who reloads .22

So kinda makes sense to me that they sold out as quickly as the rest

There is something more than just panic buying going on here. I bought two bricks of .22 ammo for a friend for Christmas mid-Dec (had to go to several stores to find any) and between then and this past Saturday I haven't seen any bricks at all at any of about a dozen stores that usually have some.

Talked to a guy that's expecting a couple of cases of Remington Thunderbolt this week but he's going to be breaking the bricks and selling individual boxes of 50 (limited to 200 rounds per customer) until those are gone. Something more going on than just nerves.

Usually there are plenty of 22's to go around. When a similar situation happened 4 years ago, there wasn't any issues with finding 22's. Now any ammo is hard to find, unless it's high dollar stuff.

There isn't . . . the 2008 panic was just as bad. That is what stopped our weekend range trips. My friends and I used to go all the time until fall 2008 panic hit. Heck, it took a year for primers to come back to the shelves.

This is why I buy ammo by the case.

I just returned from my local Fleet Farm with a sale priced box of .45 acp -- 200 rounds for $80 (Blazer Brass). That is about the same price I've been paying for the last 6 months for WWB at Wally World. This was an advertised sale in the Sunday paper and they still had plenty. They also had plenty of .40. There was a good selection of shotgun shells too.

On the other hand, there were no 9mm boxes and hardly any rifle ammo, including not a single box of .223 or .308. I was glad they had something I shoot regularly at a decent price.

In the investment world they have something called dollar-cost-averaging, where you purchase a set amount of investments every paycheck regardless of the current market prices. That's what I try to do with ammo. I try to buy some every paycheck regardless of price fluctuations, then I don't have to panic when there is a temporary scarcity.

The BESt advice I can give you is even if you have to travel a bit Seek out the small MOm and POp shops as we call them..All the big box stores ARE out...Dicks had buckshot 4 wks ago at 6.99 a box..last friday it was 11.99...I have a small gun shop in a very small town close to me and i will be going by there this sat...He had cases of 22lr and magnums,....Rifle catridges..reloading supplies etc...I will probly drop a couple hundred there saturday. The big box stores wont restock until all their price increases are in place...The 4$ 50 round box of 22lr you used to buy is gone..Trust me..Any thing reloading you can find;you better get it even if its something you can trade...This always marks the change in prices...

I've asked the people in wal mart about ammo when it was hard to get. They said they ordred it, but not much was coming through to them, generally a small percentage of what they ordered, and what they got was bought off the shelves almost immediately. Some guys ask when it will be off the truck and stocked and will come wait for it, even if its 5:00 in the morning. THATS what happens to the ammo at wal mart. They've instituted rationing at times and in some places, but it still sells out fast when it gets hard to find.

Some wal marts sell guns and reloading supplies. The local one for me had several varieties of AR's on the shelf before this stuff all went loco. Haven't heard if they will continue to stock them, but they have for a couple years I think. Colts, bushmasters, and other makes. They've never had spare mags, just the one that comes with the gun.

You are about a week late based on other folks word on this. There hasn't been much available for a while now. I am having trouble finding 45 brass for sale at stores.

All seems kinda silly to me. Same people who haven't shot through a brick of .22 in years, all of a sudden need to have 10 bricks stashed in their closet???

I will check my Walmart of choice to see what is in stock after I get my next paycheck, lol.

I do recall the ammo selling spree last election, haha, and in 2008, too.

It won't be bad unless they pass the AWB or if they start limiting who can buy ammo and with what kind of ID.

Perhaps but the talk of gun bans has always done this to the market. I suspect we will see shelves fill back up in the next 4-6 weeks and will likely settle down the rush.

I just ordered 250 rounds from Sportsmans Guide. Supposed to be available 21 Jan. They are backordered on most all 9mm.

Ha! These are also the guys you'll want to be buddies with in 4-6 weeks. They'll be selling off their stash cheap when the realize things are back to normal, and they now own more ammo than they'll ever shoot in 2 lifetimes.

Can't imagine spending $11,000. I'm a gun nut, but that seems like paranoia.

I don't think I could ever have too much ammo especially in .22 LR. :4: I love using a .22 to introduce folks to shooting and my experience is they will continue to shoot as long as there is ammo. Lots of fun and helps people to understand how many enjoy the shooting sports.

Yeah, but your also smart enough to know the drill, and not let the "sky is falling" hype get you all worked up. Some of these people are out selling a kidney so they can buy a million rounds of ammo they'll never use, just because they see everyone else doing it.

True..True...Alot of truth in what everyone is saying here. The truth of retail is price will ALWAYS increase..If a guy wants to be ahead of that 2 lifetimes...Then more power brotha.I wont slight him a bit..30/06 shells you bought 20 yrs ago are now how much?24.99..29.99..Can't saving money for the future now is a bad thing?...20 years ago that same box was 12.99..14.99..I say be prepared to reload and save..Learn how to smealt lead and cast bullets..Its all preparing for you and your families needs,I ,like most here, will always hunt and shoot.I know for a fact i dont have enough money to stock pile 2 lifetimes of ammo BUT what i do have in place is teaching my son and family how to reload, smealt lead, hunt with bow and arrow, black powder.I do believe thta as others buy, buy, buy and buy if you dont have some put away at THE price it is now than you got alot more money than i do.Shelves will restock;no doubt;and when they do notice the tags in those shelf channels change with them..Just my opinion...and 25 yrs of retail.

I don't knock anyone for stocking up ammo, hell I'm still working my way through 7.62x39 from the 80's. It's the people who wait until hysteria hits and then decide they need to stock up that make me laugh. Driving all over town and paying twice the normal price, and they don't even really know why.

I paid $28 for a box of blazer 525 coiunt at a pawn shop this weekend. Only box I could find in town. On gun broker, cases 5250 rounds are going for over $350 last I checked. I heard a rumor that Big 5 sporting goodsgets shipments on tuesdays.......BTW, they were out of all firearms except shotguns and pellet rifles.

Good thing about reloading, if properly done it can last a long time. I loaded a bunch of .22-250 in the middle of a fairbanks winter in' 97 so it was very low humidity... shot some about a month ago and it was still accurate out to 200 yds. Ima check out walmart tomorrow... gotta see it for myself...

Try freedommunitions.com i just bought 3 boxes of 308 for 13 bucks a box. not the best ammo in the world but it still shoots. also look around for gun shows. plenty of ammo there.
