Fall/Winter = hunting season, which means my freezer is once again being reloaded with squirrel, venison, maybe a turkey soon? I hope...

Any interest in an Ohio meetup to hunt and cook wild game over fire and whatnot? My schedule sucks, and I might have a free weekend for a month or more, but I haven't been following BCUSA forums much lately and just wondering if anyone else is up for it...?

I'd be interested. The state parks are okay for such activity because they limit where we can cook (and camp if that is also what you are proposing.) The national forests are fairly open to whatever we want to do. I like Wayne National Forest although it is a 2.5 hour drive for me.

Anyone have any thoughts on where to meet up for a day, a night, a weekend, or whatever anyone proposes?

With hueston woods being a state park i am not sure about the hunting. My boys and i could do it the second weekend of November.

My schedule sucks but i would show up if it works out. We made one ohio bushcrafty gathering this summer and should be able to make the winter camping symposium in Minnesota at the end o the month. Another ohio meet would be icing on the cake. Fwiw houston woods used to allow hunting but i have not checked in a few years. Likely they still do. Some state parks have some little known designated hunting areas. Josh i think we pm'd last year and i am just a bit north of you. A day trip for small game is always a possibility too.

I'm down more than likely so long as it doesn't conflict with anything currently. Even if so I'll try to swing out for a bit. are you guys trying to hike or just camp?

I'll camp or hike. I just need about a week or so notice. I'm in SW Ohio, so I'll likely stick to the southern half of the state.

I've never hunted anything smaller than a pronghorn. Would love to get out in the woods and try my hand at squirrel or rabbit.

How about a early january meet in wayne n.f.

december will be rough to camp with deer gun season and the holidays coming up, with november right around the corner some guys might need more time to plan a november meet.

having a meet a few months away will give more time for guys to plan for this.

just throwing this out guys, what do ya think.

January is fine for me, but something earlier is fine. I've been to areas of Wayne during deer season that are not frequented by hunters. I like to be respectful to hunters, but I don't think we would encounter many if any as long as we select the right location.

I've never seen a hunter at any forest other than Shawnee and they weren't legally allowed. How about a November and January meet up? Gives more folks opportunities to get out and anyone who can't make it, no big deal.

You are invited to Bushcraft camp on December 2 - 4, at Shimps Hollow Group Camp site, in the Germantown Metropark. The campsite is just south of the Welcome Center at 6910 Boomershine Rd., Germantown, OH 45327. This is roughly halfway between Cincinnati and Dayton.
The site is ours from 5PM Friday until 12 noon on Sunday. No vendors, no sponsors, no real program, just real people sharing their craft together! I am imagining a casual, fun, share what you know, show off your gear and skills, maybe learn something, and hang with like minded people kind of camp. The camp will only provide firewood and toilet paper and I've never been to a bushcraft camp so I have no idea. Please watch the weather and pack accordingly.
Contact me at jason.swiatkowski@gmail.com to RSVP or if you have questions.

If it's in Wanye NF I'll be able to come out for a bit to hang out. Overnight probably won't be doable for me this time but definitely a few hours hanging out :dblthumb:

SW Ohio Bushcamp 2016 was a success! The weather was great with cool days and cold nights but no rain. Friday I got to the campsite late and quickly set up my tent in the dark. As a challenge, I wanted to go the entire weekend without artificial light so putting up the tent was done by lantern. My other challenges were to not use my coat (left in car) and to not use the case of water in my trunk. Dinner was parched corn, peanuts and hot coffee. I slept cold Friday night and woke up to condensation everywhere! Breakfast was oatmeal with raisons and the last of my coffee. Cut and split wood for the days'fires, made a hat full of shavings, then went on a long hike to gather water. The nearby creeks were dry so getting water took over an hour! Got back to camp and had a quick snack of peanuts, parched corn and sunflower seeds. Cut more wood. Filtered and boiled some water for tea. Got started on dinner at about 2PM, built up the fire and started prepping chicken stew. Put it on to cook at about 3 and put some bannock on at 4:30. Both were ready at about 5, just as the sun was setting. The chicken stew was excellent but the bannock was a bit burned. By 6 it was dark so I sat around the fire for a bit, then turned in for the night. Slept in until 7:30 on Sunday, had a quick breakfast of peanuts / corn / sunflower seeds and tea, then packed up camp and left at about 8 AM.
I processed wood for my fires, water for drinking and cooked two full meals, plus drinks. I used electric lights for about one minute total (in the tent), never needed my coat and gathered most of my water. It was a great outing and I can't wait to do it again this spring!

Reading over the thread, it looks like January was looking good for most people. Someone needs to make the call and give time / date / place. I am interested but not going to organize another outing so soon.

I'm definitely down to get out this January. I think some guys were interested in making camp at some point, when and if I hear of anything I'll make a new post for a heads up. I'd feel bad hijacking this thread. Also I don't think there will be any hunting involved but who knows?

On Christmas Day I may hit wildcat hollow to check conditions, been awhile. It was always a prime meeting spot for us on hammock forums as you had the option to hike or to only hike a couple hundred yards or so and still had a solid backcountry feel.

So I guess I went AWOL from the forums for a while. Sorry! I think I'm old for last two weekends in January. Plenty of venison stacked in the freezer by now.

Hey I might be going on a spontaneous overnight tomorrow (technically tonight) 1/31 at Mohican (most likely site 1). Been really wanting to get out and especially do a winter campout. Our Ohio winter campout last year was like 40s-50s ha ha not a flake of snow in sight. PM me if anyone is interested in a random outing.
