    Saw this in another thread,

it went a bit unnoticed. But I jumped on it as its the best deal on these I've seen. I got 6 for $15, and free shipping. When I did, another faster shipping option popped up for free, make sure to check the box. I don't know if its available for one order or if it was thrown in because I bought 3 sets.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/150797017657?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

These are softer, and shower fire. Big thanks to the original poster for the tip!

You can also get 8 of them for $18 with free shipping:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-8-Ferro...pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item231c33d5e8

That's $2.25 a piece! I missed this when buying mine. So for a little more than one light my fire army steel, why not have 8?

Seems like a great deal. The army rods are 3/8 inch, these say 5/16. I only mention it since they might be loose in some knife sheath loops designed for the larger size. Thanks for posting the link.

I've bought directly from that seller on ebay they do bids as well as buy it now just for fun I bought their 5 inch x 1/2 inch one for only 11 on a bid. I've had no issues with them yet.

FYI....those come straight from Shenzhen, China so it will take some time to get to you and they can be stopped by customs. You also might get charged a foreign country fee by your bank.

I ordered the pack of 8 in November from this same seller, it took about two weeks to get them and they work great. I made a handle for one and carry it all the time, I also made one for The Professor (I don't know if he has used it yet.) I'm supposed to be making more for friends and family, but have not gotten around to it. I better get busy on that. I don't like buying from China, but wouldn't be afraid to buy these again.

This was right after I attached the lanyard (it doesn't look so new anymore:)

I believe you can only get charged customs fees on items of a higher value. The odds of it getting held up are fairly minimal for any reason. Plus, the US has very lenient trade laws with China.

I have received several items from China including a knife without issue.

Thanks for the heads up. I got the 5/16"x4" because I like them a little longer. Figured 3 for $7 wasn't too bad.

I use a drawstring system to secure my army steels, I plan on doing the same.. At the end of the day though, I'm not a big fan of keeping all my gear on my sheath. I prefer having a dedicated fire kit.

Thanks for the look. I've been meaning to pick up some blanks, I've got a deer antler shed to use for handles. Everyone has good experience with these, i.e. spark well?

    Btw,

just wanted to thank xj35s for the original tip that I happen to catch.

To answer your question, yes these work very well according to him. They are a bit softer so they shower molten fire.

If your concerned about them not fitting an ''army'' version firesteel holder.. Just use a security strap like a drawstring which I do anyway. After all, the army steels don't stay that size forever anyways ;)

Last one I got only took 1 week. The one before that 11 days. So generally at most 2 weeks for me.Might just do a quick video atleast showing how they spark later on

Hawai'i MUCH closer to China than the mainland US but for some reason mail from China is never sent direct to Hawai'i but usually via New York or San Francisco so things take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive here from China. :11:

Those are two very large customs sorting facilities.

Must suck getting mail to Hawaii but then again your living in Hawaii. A bit difficult for me to feel sad for you :1:

Sigh... this is like crack for me...

    Got a three pack of the 8mm x 100mm (5/16 x 4) and one of the 1/2 x 5 mamma-jammas on the way...

Thanks for the heads-up on these...

Really glad to see everyone jumping on this,

I can't see myself ever paying for $15 firesteels again frankly. Plus, even a DIY philistine such as myself can even now have a go at putting a handle on one of these :11:

It's really a drag when you're trying to make a friction fire on the beach and curious bikini clad women keep on coming by asking what you're doing. Have pity on me. :34:

Have you noticed any difference in the quality/quantity of spark that comes of it? I've had some small rods that took a long time to get through the surface layer to a point where it was giving off a good spray of sparks. It's as if the the first couple of thousanths of the surface needed to be scrapped off first.

I bought 8 smaller diameter rods from this seller before. I got them in about 2 weeks to New England. Now I have one just about everywhere. The do throw more of a "chunky" spark but the get the job done. I have been using them for since October 2012.

I picked up the 8 as well, it'll be my first try at fire starting this way. I'm a newbie here having a lot of fun so far. You guys are a wealth of info. Bought a condor bushcraft knife and a GB forest axe, the GB is awesome, I have got to learn to sharpen the knife, it's a beast, but its not sharp at all.

Really awesome to see everyone jumping on this,

I'm tempted to buy a set of 8 myself even though I have 6 coming.

Don't forget to select the faster shipping option on the checkout page if your order qualifies for it :dblthumb:

To clarify, these are softer than the LMF firesteel, and so strike with bigger sparks? I guess that also means they have a shorter life? Not complaining, just thinking of how I want to set up the handles.

    Yes,

but shelf life also depends on how evenly you use it.

They are all made in the same plant in China, even the "Swedish" ones. The difference is in the mixture of metals that they use. Here is the company, http://www.jxmetals.com/sdp/316680/4/pl-1271720/0-637725.html , they tell you the mixtures of the metals in the descriptions.

If you got the money you can get it straight from the source. When I inquired there was a min order of 90 for 3/16" x 4" With shipping and all other charges it came out to about 300 bucks.

Exy - The transaction fee is levied by my bank and it's not a customs fee. It's usually small. I was just giving the heads up.

that's crazy about the transaction fee. First I've ever heard of something like that. So this happens even if your using PayPal? How bizarre.

I got mine yesterday - pack of 8.

They throw sparks nicely. It seems to be about half way between the LMF and the ones from firesteel.com.

I like them a lot. They hit a sweet spot between sprarkiness and globiness :dblthumb:

For anyone that buys them if you have an old folding saw laying around not being used cut it to striker size the back of it works great.I cut my old coleman one up just for a striker plus if the sawblade edge is dull you can use it as a scrapper for birchbark or fatwood to make shavings or birds nest with.

    Got mine today :)

Total time from payment to delivery was 10 days.. Not bad at all ;)

I took a paper towel and scraped a bit of black off.. First try it globbed a nice ball of molten lava off and set the paper towel on fire!

Easiest I've used yet.. I like how long they are too.
