That is wild! That's urban bushcraft right there.

It reminds me of that 80's TV show "Beauty and the Beast". They had a whole community living under New York.

Not New York ('twas Las Vegas), But, I read this book a while back, and it was fascinating.
"Beneath the Neon: Life and Death in the Tunnels of Las Vegas"
    Excerpt:
"Armed with a flashlight, tape recorder, and expandable baton, Las Vegas
CityLife writer and editor Matthew O’Brien explored the black-and-gray underworld of the Las Vegas flood-control system for four years.
Beneath the Neon: Life and Death in the Tunnels of Las Vegas chronicles O’Brien’s adventures in subterranean Las Vegas. He follows in the footsteps of a psycho killer. He braces against a raging flood. He parties with naked crackheads. He learns how to make meth, that art is most beautiful where it’s least expected, that in many ways, he prefers underground Las Vegas to aboveground Las Vegas, and that there are no pots of gold under the neon rainbow."

I figured that was why the door comes off the hinge.

I don't think the door coming off the fridge would make it any easier to get in that hole. It does look like that original hole was larger and he used some plywood to make it smaller.

Even with the door comming off I still can't see how he could've gotten it in there. It's not a standard manhole size entrance for sure.

Another thought is it would suck if one of those subway trains derailed and come to rest on top of that little hole. They wouldn't find you for days!!

I wonder how long it will be when some NYC authorities discover his domicile?

The way I see it he has a tremendous jump on the rest of us. I just don't think I could spend too much time in such a confined space. Sort of like a jail cell.

All it would take though is for someone to put a snare over the hole, and Zing!, Zombie chow.

I'm not so sure about them doing so good, it's true they live and survive on the fringe of society, but they are sourcing from an intact and functioning society. WTSHTF
their supplies from the cities will become scarce and hard to come by just like for everybody else, and they'll be competing from hand to mouth with a population of some
    really desperate 'unprepared' sheeple.

I feel a skilled Bushcrafter could flourish in a homeless setting

When my BC skills reach a level I would like to attimpt living this way
And assuming I have my bills dealt with. One day.....one day
