Been pretty busy at 88 lately. The new Range and Readiness center has opened up and with that I have been teaching quite a few Ropes and Rappelling classes.

The 70' tower is a one of a kind feature in this area.

My Intro classes start with the basics and rappelling on the inside wall.

In the other classes that are offered there are opportunities to go down the "Spider Hole" and complete a 70' free rappel.

I am still doing all of the Survival Skills classes, and we just completed a SERE class that was purchased at Shot Show.

Some the Op for guys we a great help on the set up and tear down of certain aspects of the class.

One of my favorite spots and set ups.

    Cutters for the class

Late night drying fire, some how the students got wet.

    Early morning warming fire.

Its a rough life! ;) Glad you're keeping busy and passing on all the good knowledge. Maybe someday I can make it up that way, sigh. Thanks for sharing with us.

Don't know what their training profile was there but back when I used to do such things, the rack gave you a lot more control when doing pick offs and didn't load your system as hard when you picked up the weight of the second person as you didn't get that slight drop that you got with an eared 8 when you unlocked and started down again.

Well if I had read the rest of the posts before replying I would see that IA Woodsman had already answered.

Also, the 10 foot inside wall is the mark of a professional, it is so much easier to teach the basics when the trainees are not terrified. The mechanics are no different on a 10 foot rappel than a 300 one but the stress factor is a lot higher until the person gets comfortable with it. By the way looks like an incredible facility wish you the utmost success with it.

I had a Basic Ropes and Rappelling class yesterday. I did not get a bunch of pics but I did get a few.

If you are going to learn how to go down a rope, it is my opinion you need to learn how to go back up. Ascending a rope is an important self rescue skill.

I should have some good pics after the Intermediate Survival class this weekend. There are still spots available, if you are interested PM me of register at ZOZI Advance 2.0

The rappelling and ropework class looks like a blast! I got thrown into the fire when I learned in bootcamp. We had to tie our own Swiss seats and my first rappel was down the 50ft spider hole. I would have rather learned from you.

Lol, my classes are a little different from the military. We actually get in to the rigging and dig a little deeper into the rescue side of things.

Last weekend I taught a Intermediate Survival Skills course. As usual, Kurt was there to help me out. I can not thank him enough for the support and hard work that he provides with every class I do.

I got to the camp at about 1100. Hobmeyer was there to give me a hand. For those of you who have not met Jason Hobmeyer, you are in for a treat.

Got the chute up and ready to roll.

Bump for a great thread. My first days rappelling started in 1973 or 74. We made a bowline on the bite and wrapped a rope around a tree then came back to a triple slip knot, off a cliff face we would dangle. Then I was introduced to 3 inch webbing and making your own swiss seat and a figure 8. In college I did a lot of caving and used a rack and breaker bar with Bluewater rope. Leather purskit knots to climb out of a hole until I bought some Gibbs Asenders, made us very brave caving. I still have the 200 feet of Bluewater rope and my caving gear; I'm 55 YO BTW. The thought of a climbing harness like today would have been awesome back in the day. Those materials were 'unobtainium'. The 70 foot wall would be fun to train on. We would rope off a 300 foot bridge, climb the cat walk underneath and throw tennis balls while hanging. Crazy stuff in college, typically done at midnight on a weekend.

A trip to Iowa for an extended class would be great, especially a first responder emergency class, some swift water rescue and tactical defense with firearms, blades and other. Seems to me there is a lot of room to expand your curriculum and ultimately have a Range & Readiness annual convention/expo. Bring in experts that offer classes, think of it like boy scout camp and you want to earn a bunch of merit badges.

Great thread and business, buenos suerte (good luck!)

Sorry for the delay on posting up new pics, but here are some from our last Level 3 Survival Skills.

I love low light situations for training. It is not very often stuff goes wrong at noon on a beautiful day.

A awesome upper teens frosty morning.

A hasty camp set up in the dark. Hillsides never look as steep in the dark.

This class really focuses on improvising.

    A little SET M1 action.

Shelters were completed just in time for the snow.

Had a good time at the Intro to Survival Skills yesterday. Of course @Kurt992 aka "fancy pants" was there to help me out.

The students had a good time with some fire craft and shelter building exercises.

I hear Kurt's pissed about the new issue trousers, I wouldn't wear them.

Some pics of my last Basic class. This was a great class and I really had a good time at this one.

Kurt was able to ride his Iron Horse, it was really handy for the logistics side of the class.

There was also enough snow to talk about sleds, and their many uses. Great gear haulers.

We also had enough snow to make decent snow shelter. Senior Instructor Chris Brammer was able to use some old school GI magnesium snow shoes to compress the shelter.

We always have a fire going for hot food and drinks. In the winter you have to keep fuel in the fire.

A-frames were the shelters for this class. This one was made with a Bushcraft Outfitters 10'X7' Multicam Tarp.

G2 Gear Roll and Mother Canteen Carrier were in full effect.

There was also more firecraft, Deadfalls and snares, and a signaling lab.
