Does anyone know what the nearest or best airport is to the area?
Wescott will need to answer that, unless Bad Hand chimes in. He lives a few miles from this place. They run a shuttle for Rabbitstick, so that may be available for this event as well, although it is a different location.
I think I will start a ride share thread in here as well, for folks that would like to try to carpool.
Jackson Hole is super close. I have flown in there before, a little pricey because its Jackson Hole if you don't book real early.
I have also flown into Salt Lake City as it is has been considerably less for me with my airline choices. 4.5 hour drive to the Tetons.
I know that it is quite a distance to Idaho from the east coast areas. This thread is to discuss transportation options, including flying in or car pooling.
If you are going and have room for another person or two, want to share the cost of fuel, relief driving, etc., just post it up in here.
The thread on Woodsmoke 2012 Information is here.
vaca request put in yesterday, as well as my wifes. Were renting a car and driving. Will have room for at least one.
Last time in that area I flew into Idaho Falls via Salt Lake City.
My vacation was applied for and approved today. 4th - 16th. Anybody close to me wanna carpool.
Idaho Falls is provably the closeest airport for most people who live in country . .338winmag
Got wifely approval at least initially, just need to work out details
I've been to Jackson Hole before, good to know it's nearby.
The distance to Jackson Hole and Idaho Falls is the same (amazing drive from Jackson to Tetonia over Teton Pass). They both charge premium prices to fly there. I fly into Salt Lake City and take the Trailways shuttle up for a lot less money and they have pretty regular runs. We can pick people up in Rexburg, and get them to the site (about 30 miles). I'm not sure if they come up to Driggs or not.
The only problem with the shuttle is that you are stuck with us - you don't have the flexibility to run around on your own like you would with a rental car.
I'm in Tetonia running a 7 day winter course and will be back in the office on Monday. I'll get some shuttle info posted then. DW
I think I may fly in instead of drive. If someone would like to split the cost of a rental car in Tetonia I would be game for that. I cant see $340 for a car that wont get used much. But it would be nice to have one handy.
I am going. To early for me to pull the trigger on exactly when I am coming, how I am coming, and if I fly, where I am flying into. Plus the wife and kids may come... still figuring that out.
I imagine many will come from the forum, so sharing a ride will come together in a couple months.
Where do you plan to fly into?
Edit: I no longer plan on going.
http://www.saltlakeexpress.com/ will also get you from SLC, Idaho Falls, Boise, or Jackson airports to Rexburg. (I usually see them using Sprinter vans with a trailer)
I'll be driving from Great Falls MT if anyone needs a ride, or a pick up from the airport (if its somewhat along the way).
The only places to rent a car are SLC, Idaho Falls or Jackson. Tentonia only has a restaurant, bar and a C store. Driggs did have a car rental but they went out of business, Driggs has several restaurants, a large grocery store, an Ace Hardware.
I know this is a horrible question, but I have to ask. My work forces me to keep a connection with the internet. Is there cell service on site, 3g? Its almost a make or breaker for me.
Looking at the AT&T map and using Google Maps, it looks like 3G is available there. Teton County is where it is.
I would never have thought that kind of coverage would be available there.
Yes there is very good cell reception here, there is broad band also in the valley. There are a lot of people telecommute to work and Paul Allen has a big ranch here so cell service is not a problem.
thanks this is helpful. Oddly I'll have to fly out after dropping off a rental car to go to Europe after this shindig.
My 15 year old son and I are thinking pretty hard about this. We are 2 hours east of Cheyenne, WY, making it a 9-10 hour drive. We could meet up with anyone coming from Nebraska or Denver/Eastern Colorado. We could carry 1-2 or jump in with you. I figured almost $300 in gas, round trip if we do it alone... would be glad to try and cut that down.
I guess this is still far cheaper than flying...?
If you are flying in and need some gear let me know because I have extra stuff like sleeping bags, tent and such.
Thech and those planning to drive, Rock Springs has the cheapest gas. If you take I 80 to Rock Springs and then the turn off to Jackson do not speed on the lonely 2 lane highway it is heavily patrolled because it is one of the main highways to Yellowstone and Teton National Parks.
Thank you much, Bad Hand, for the gas and speed check info, and for the equipment offer - we're driving the whole way!
I am going to secure me an spot tomorrow. I live in N. Idaho and nearby we have an international airport in Spokane Washington. If someone is flying in from this location you can taxi into nearby Coeur d Alene and hitch an ride with me. I've got extra tents or an tarp if you need one and cannot provide.
I will be leaving from Coeur d Alene Idaho across I-90 east to Butte Montana and then south on I-15 to Rexberg.
Booked my flight to Jackson Hole, arriving June 6th around 2 pm. Just wondering if anyone passing by has an extra place for one on their way to Tetonia. I'll gladly chip in for gas.
Cutting it close here. Due to in part to financial hiccups. Some of my own accidental doing, others not. I've yet to book my damn flight. Hoping to get this squared away this coming Friday. Hoping to come in either Saturday or Sunday to Jackson Hole. Not sure how I'll get up to the site from there yet. Really looking forward to this, but I have to be honest, I'm nervous as hell about this trip. I've always had people I know picking me up. Just keep having this recurring thought of being stuck somewhere and not being able to get to the event. Still not even sure what / how to pack for this.
It's only about 40 miles from Jackson to the Woodsmoke site. I think arrangments can be made to catch a ride. Contact David Wescott at email@example.com to see if any shuttles have been arranged.
Don't worry about getting stuck in Jackson Hole, I know something can be arranged to make sure you get to the event.
WiskieTango and myself will be driving through Jackson on the way from Kansas. We could prob fit 1 extra in my '12 tacoma.
Looking at flights to the place now. Might not be able to drive out like originally planned
Also, may try to modify schedule to other peoples flights for cheaper shuttle out there.
OK: I'll be flying in on the Third, renting a vehicle, and running around Utah snake hunting until around Weds night where I will be going up to the camp site. Will be there until Tuesday night of the next week
Finally got booked for the trip today. I'll be coming in from MSP to JAC on the 7th and will be there through the 16th. Was hoping to leave slightly earlier to head back home but money is tight so the cheapest flight was back out on the 16th.
So time is ticking and I have yet to find a way to the event from Jackson. I'll be in Jackson from the 6th, leaving out from there the 16th as well. If anyone does have an extra place on their way, please do let me know. Looking forward to this!!
We have room for 1 and can meet ya in Jackson on the morning of the 6th.
Oh great! I only arrive around 2pm so let me know if that's convenient for you. Thanks for the offer!
Any idea of the times / rates on the shuttles?
There is a bus that runs from Jackson to Driggs but you would have to get to Jackson to catch it. I will try and check out a schedule tomorrow. If you can make it as far as either Victor or Driggs I can get you the rest of the way.
The airport is a long ways from Jackson would be the problem.
This is the website with the bus schedule from Jackson to Driggs. The problem is still getting from the airport to the bus.
Shuttle or Taxi from Airport shouldn't be an issue, but will likely cost you more than you will prefer.
anyone from northern california want to carpool?
Well after looking at it, that SLC shuttle will work to get to the event. Unfortunately, their times don't jibe with my departure time. Really not the 'throw caution to the wind' kind of guy, but I haven't gotten a response from my last 2 emails to David. I'm sure he's incredibly busy prepping for this. Really don't want to just get myself there and be either a burden for someone to have to go out of their way to help get me back to the airport, but I don't want to get stuck there either. I get that I'm kind of obsessive about having plans ahead of time, but it's a bit nerve wracking.
What are your departure times? I live just north of Salt Lake and may be able to help you out.
Can't remember for sure how close the shuttle gets me to the event. But I come in on the 7th @ 6:54pm.
Flight out is on Monday the 16th @ 9:05am at Jackson Hole.
