Went with a few friends today to check trail conditions for a local 300 mile mushing race. We did a 113 miles checking the open holes and trail debris.

I don’t have many pics as on the loop back we ran into 60+ mph winds it got pretty sketchy sideways snow around -30couldn’t see the drifts got huge and we hit a bunch of over flow. All back safe :)

Got to try out my 3v bolo I just got as well

Kilbuck mountains there a lady who’s homesteaders up there for the past 45 years. She heats her home from a hot spring. I’m going to make the trip up there this year to visit her and check it out.

@aktatts I have always wanted to know why some people call snowmobiles (snow machines)?

Here no one calls them snow machines. It seems that it is about Minnesota and north they are called that. Always wondered

Would love to be able to ride that far in the bush. Here it is usually max about 1/2 mile. While there are some islands that we ride around that are about 5-7 miles long. But, if you are caught you can be ticketed because they are OWNED!!!! by the US Army Corps of Engineers. You are not allowed to drive on the Corps land unless it is a road.

Oh man that’s not too far where are you located? Here there’s really no restrictions on where you can go. A few friends of mine bought brand new snow machines in anchorage and drove them back here it was a 700 mile trip. We were talking about doing in in 2019 it’s like a week long trip. You can ride literally 1000 + miles (which I havnt done) and not see anyone it’s pretty amazing.

If you look at Iowa. Look to the farthest you can go east. I call it the nose of Iowa. That is where I am at. The islands are on the Mississippi River. We have designated snowmobile paths but you are usually riding in the ditches along highways and down gravel roads.

One of my best friends races Arctic cat on a drag strip in the summer. He is running in the 7 sec 1/4 mile at 158mph. He is nuts! Pretty cool though watching him outrun 1/2 the drag cars.

They call them snow machines here in California too. My dad is REALLY into them and has taken me along a time or two when he had an extra machine to let me borrow, usually when he still has an older one and has recently bought a new one.

@aktatts this is a great trip report! What's the name of her book, I would be interested in reading it.

A lot of people call them snow machines here too or also call them sleds. I see a Tundra there. What are the popular snow machines there? I don't like the newer Tundras from the last few years. The older Tundras are in demand here.

That is a 600 ave tundra they are actually great engines. For a new tundra that’s the motor I’d want. It gets almost 30 mpg pretty insane. I have an old tundra a one lunger love that too. My main machine is a Yamaha rs venture great for traveling.

Yeah, never have figured that one out either. Gotta' get about to the Canadian border though to hear that in Minnesota. Too many snowmobile manufacturers here now. I see a lot of "snow-throwers" listed locally and had never known them to be anything but "snow-blowers."

That trail survey on sleds looks like an outstanding adventure. How fun! Can only fantasize riding this remotely. The UP of Michigan feels pretty remote at times and Minnesota has more miles of groomed SM trails than state highways, but it's not the same as being in the bush.
