Anyone interested in putting something on the calendar for a late spring campout and/or a fall campout?

The Hocking River trip is a good option to me. Timber Ridge is great also. I’m up for new areas like Tar Hollow as well. My schedule is flexible.

We had an idea for May 18-19. I'm still going out that weekend, by myself or with a group. I like Hocking River, May 18-19. I have a big canoe but need someone to ride in the bow. No way am I paddling the barge by myself with the river up.

I’d love to, may and June are all but shot for me though, I’ll be in Idaho for my only free weekends in May.

That’s a non exhaustive list of members above. Come one, come all.

We would like to have some of the newer members join as well.

I'm good to go anytime except for Memorial Day weekend. The river is a good trip but I'm not opposed to trying a new location altogether.

I’ve not been to Tar Hollow. It’s less than a 2 hrs drive for most of us.

@Red Wing has some experience there. Any recommendations for Tar Hollow? I wouldn’t mind backpacking in to force me to stop bringing so much dang stuff.

I'm not sure if they have backcountry sites but they've got 6 or so primitive sites by the fire tower that are always open. 400ft. Walk from parking with a privy. Lots of bridal trails and possibilities for off trail camping with such low foot traffic if you really wanted to be in the woods.

I just looked at their website and it looks promising. I like it being a bit closer to us western Ohio folks and having a lake. The sites near the fire tower look good.
Lets call it: Tar Hollow on the 18- 19. I'd like to arrive on the 17th just for my own enjoyment so 17 - 19 if you want.

Sounds good. Does anyone know if we need to register for a primitive site?

You can if the office is open but I've only registered once out of the 10 or more times I've camped there and I've never been bothered by rangers. Seems pretty low key.

My son set our patio on fire after school today. Damage limited to stuff on one table top, thank God. May not be able to go out any time soon if he keeps acting crazy. 20190509_163021.jpg

Sure hope you can make it @jswi2374.

Let’s get something on the calendar for fall. My calendar is extremely flexible so anyone else feel free to propose a date. October would be fantastic.

@WY_Not no injuries or burns. I keep a bucket in the patio so it was two steps out the door to the faucet, ten seconds to get some water, then two steps in and dump! After three cycles the fire was out.
Really glad I was headed out for a smoke when I was. Another 5 minutes...

Getting this thread back on track: Tar Hollow, May 17 - 19. Is anyone in besides @hlydon and myself?

@jswi2374 are you still planning to camp Friday and Saturday night? If so, let me know where to meet you Friday. I’ll likely arrive with just enough time to set up before dark.

I think I’m going to bring backpacking foods. I want to start backpacking, so I’ll use this campout as a test.

I will be there Friday - Sunday. Not sure what time I'll get there Friday but I can text you my location. Likely one of the sites by the fire tower. Or just in the woods off of one of those sites. We're in for some weather tonight so got to think about windbreaks, widow makers, drainage, etc.

Anyone else getting the itch to head out for a few days?
I decided the dates and location for the last camp out so it seems right to let someone else call the next outing.
Any interest in a summer camp? Hopefully on or near some water?

Past ready. Was hoping @dadman would propose something.

    Timber Ridge Lake Wayne NF?
    Hocking River Wayne NF?
A state park campground and lake?

Hoping to check it out Tuesday or Wednesday if my wife is up for a hike, I’m really wanting to check out the lake and hike a piece of the trail toward symmes creek to see if there is anyplace note worthy creek side.

Creek side camping sounds good in this heat and bugs leave you be if you smell like creek water!

I checked out those locations, Kenton lake looked nice, secluded..can drive about a quarter way around it if you have a vehicle with a little clearance. A couple decent tent sites for 2-4 tents, couple of the spots are just a few yards away from one another. There is a trail that runs to the deep end of the lake which has a small but nice site just off the lake in the woods ( a 10- 20 yards from lake side maybe). Parking wouldn’t be a problem for a group at the lake. Morgan sister trail goes right by it too which in turn connects to symmes creek trail there is also a trail loop called coal branch.. I think the total trail miles all combined would be 12-14 miles.
No parking at all on the symmes creek trail heads, there is room beside the road for maybe 2 or 3 vehicles. Trail is very overgrown in some spots and not to bad in others given the time of year. I walked a mile or 2 from trail head 2
These pics are from the lake I’ll upload some from the short hike into symmes creek trail head#2 later this evening, some pretty cool rock outcrops along the way.

What’s the verdict? Is it worth a campout? I need to get an overnighter/weekender in soon or else I’m going to have to sleep in my woods.

Lake might be for something different....it’s not near as nice as timber ridge tho. But then..I think it would be amazing to do the trail in the fall when it isn’t so over grown.

The lake looks good to me too. Maybe bring a kayak.... a fishing pole.... Were those cattails on the far bank?
I'd like to try out hammock camping for the first time and the weather is perfect for it.

No, I was really asking. The pics don't show the far bank very clearly.

I’m ready for a kayak campout. Kenton Lake sounds good. I’m game whenever, but a fall campout would be better.

To anyone interested, I just bought a second kayak for the sole purpose of lending it to someone that doesn’t have one. So I have you covered if you want to join us for a canoe/kayak campout.
