    Attending:

designtom - 2 - Late evening Fri Jan 11, with Charlie the Chocolate Lab & probably Chocolate Spatula?
    Forestcactus - 1
    GoKartz - 1 - Arrive Jan12
    HalfTreaded - 1 - Hike-In on the 12th for 1 overnight.
    Juany118 - 1 - Currently Friday Afternoon.
    lyco.woodsrunner - 1 - 12th and 13th
    Odinborn - 1 - Friday morning
Outdoor Dauber - 1 - Plan on arriving Friday late afternoon and out on Saturday afternoon.
Sbrody - 1 - Early Friday afternoon. Possibly plus one.
    x19delta - 1

    Total: 11

*** UPDATE NOTE! *** Due to the fact that the 2019 rule is not the same as in 2018, the obvious situation changes are with the overnight vehicle parking, and the related number of overnight stays.

Individually, we make our own choices so the ultimate decision is up to the persons attending. We have no group leaders (people in charge) but instead facilitators (people who help).

I hope this posting, about the permit update, does not lead to more questions than answers, but instead clarify the intended purpose of the A.T. Corridor campsite as per the MSF district office 2019 communication.

I'd love to go. It's almost 2 hours from me, so I can't say yes for certain yet, but if other people choose a weekend and the weather is nice then I'll be there. I love that location: close to a great water source, parking close to the campsite, and right on the AT.

    I can't do it the 20th though, daughter's birthday.

January and no snow? I'm in!

Seriously, I'm good with any weekend. It's only 2 hours away. How far do you plan to go in from the trailhead? I'm still trying to adjust to the rockiness and hilliness of the trails in this area. I did fine a couple weekends ago on the "Fall Meetup" at Hertlein (4 miles in/out, not terribly steep), but I also know I'll sleep warmer with more 'stuff' (like a wool-blanket-wrapped air mattress.)

You know me, I'm close enough it doesn't really matter which weekend you choose. I'll be able to make at least some of it. Hopefully most!

Ok... looked at the map more closely. You're saying it's car camping if you want to drive, or you can walk the AT from either of the two lots if you want. I get it now. I think I'll car camp this one. I'm still getting back into "winter camping"... been a lot of years, and I'm still trying to figure out what works in the way of gear and clothing.

Snow is nice, especially when it's deep... warmest winter nights I've ever been out have been spent as a kid in a snow cave. Coldest were in the Army with 'modern' cold weather gear and tents. And yes, it does hide a lot of rocks and makes for a flat bed.

@Seeker The location that @HalfTreaded is talking about is my favorite winter camping spot for that exact reason. You can't see your car from the camping spot, but it's a 2 minute easy hike to get back to the car. The parking spots are also right on the edge of Tom's Run, so very easy access to clear, free flowing water. Here's a picture of the firepit to psych everyone up:

Cool. Looking forward to this after 16 years in the heat. Dec-Feb were my favorite months down there, because it was in the 20/30s at night and 40s/low 50s during the day, no bugs, no snakes.

That wood was mostly done by Lode before we had even arrived. Good thing too, I was having a hard time finding wood to process that wasn't seasoned pine. Stuff burns hot, but was popping like crazy.

I am tentatively good for either the weekend of Jan 11 or Jan 25. Those are the only 2 weekends I have off that month though so of course and being 2 months away I am not 100% sure what family obligations may come along.

Will have to wait until winter sports activities calendar is finalized, but if I can make it even for a day I will do my best.

If this is open to any members in PA, then I could probably put in some PTO for whichever weekend is decided upon.

I just thought to mention to any members that might decide to attend: depending on the weather, since it will be in the winter, Old Shippensburg Road might be a no-go for parking. If I remember correctly, its fairly steep for the first 100 yards with a bend when you first turn onto it across from the Pine Grove Furnace SP office. @NattyBo or @Lode will definitely be able to correct this if I'm wrong.

Speaking of Bo, if you have the time at this meet, I would love for you to show me around the Camp Michaux site. I'd like to see the site through the eyes of the historical society!

Well I was given the thumbs up for whatever weekend everyone agrees on. My better half is horrible at Christmas gifts, so when she asked me this morning what I wanted I said: "just to spend the holidays with you and the kids... And a free pass to go camping for any weekend".

The only way I won't make it there now is if she tells me the "free weekend pass" is valid when her parents come to visit as well ;)

I want to tag @Norm and @Pathfinder in case either one hasn't seen the thread. You really threw me for a loop @HalfTreaded since I almost tagged JoeMez

Please someone else vote for the 11th if they don't care. We poor civil servants have minimum manpower issues so even though I have the time can't use it :(.

How should I know if I will like hanging with you? You're just a stranger on the internet... but if you promise to bring candy then I'll vote for the 11th (i'll be there no matter what weekend you guys pick, so I haven't voted).

I think timberdogz was trying to tag @ChocolateSpatula? I haven't had a chance to do an outing with you, but us young pups need to stick together. Don't leave me in the cold with these old... err... experienced bushcrafters.

Already hung with a bunch during the fall meet up and a hike with our host/OP a week ago. @ChocolateSpatula? Is actually one I have already done an overnighter with at the fall meet up with more than a few others.

That's why I love this site....

All BushcraftUSA folk, just last month on the AT. So I can't speak for you of course but I can speak for myself saying I have yet to find a person at a meetup I would not want to raise a cup with again.

I was just playing around, I've never met someone from this site that I didn't like. Friendly group of people, and the PA/surrounding area members are very active in meets. I enjoy living in such an active area.

fyi, @ChocolateSpatula? only gets on the internet once in a while. Per text she's working collecting her winter camping gear list, and is excited about this trip coming together.

Anybody got insulated snow pants or wool pants to donate in the < 28" waste range? (and probably some suspenders)

Wondering if a youth medium or large would fit her? https://www.cabelas.com/custserv/custserv_popup.jsp?pageName=SizingChartsKidsCloth

I've cast my lot for Jan 11/12/13.

I'm eyeing the parking lot at Michaux Rd and Bunker Hill Rd 40.037477, -77.338210 . With a 7/10th mile hike (heading northbound or actually East) to the meetup campsite on the AT.

State Forest personnel like the wording "hiking and camping northbound on the Appalachian trail". There are no State Gamelands or State Parks involved from this location. I'm planning on shooting them a heads up e-mail 21 days ahead of meetup as a general I'll be in the area notification that includes my trip dates, plate #, contact info, etc. ra-fd01@pa.gov

The State Park with Southbound hiking is another option. You'll get a nicer parking lot, with rangers who patrol it. You will need to arrange for overnight parking permit there.

Sounds like a plan. Just got the green light from Lylly. Hopefully this time Babysitting doesn't fall through so I can land on Friday. Lylly also asked "when can I go" and about pouted when I pointed out that she doesn't have any winter gear because she hates the cold. So in the interest of family unity I will likely host something in warmer climes. :)

I think it looks like a number of us have sad we are going on Jan 11-13. All are welcome but that doesn't mean people can't get together on another.

That said, for the 11-13 crowd. Since weather will be less forgiving, and we are a team, I am going to start another thread so we can see what people are bringing that can be "community" tools. We are already going to have heavier load outs, no reason for everyone to bring a kitchen sink when one or two will do ;).

Oh forgot, does anyone have either a long/lat for the site or is they a key landmark/feature visible from the trail that marks it? I have off the entire weekend so I suspect I may be earlier than most, if not all.

I work 3rd, Sun-Thurs nights. So if all goes right and the weather is good, I should be there Friday morning/very early afternoon. There's absolutely nothing that marks the spot that I can think of. I'm pretty sure our resident cartographer @HalfTreaded will have lat/long readings for you.

I would post on the thread when I arrive at the site, so if anyone has problems they can let me know. When it gets closer to time I can share my phone number with anyone that wants/needs a contact at the site for when they arrive

Yeah I rotate back to 8am to 8pm duty shift that week, and it's my short week (Wed and Thursday only). The only thing that might delay my arrival is who has to pick up the munchkin from after school care.

Keep me in the loop guys I am most likely coming to this. Are these established campsites or primitive near a parking lot. Was googling today couldn’t find a map

That's my plan as well. Right now my ETA looks to be late morning/early afternoon. In warmer weather I would have considered parking further away and getting a nice trek in.

If people want to get a little more distance, there's a huge parking lot at the office for PGFSP fairly close as well. The caveat would be that you would need to check in with the office and sign in so they know you're vehicle is allowed to be parked there.

From here, you can walk up Old Shippensburg Road, or walk over to where the AT crosses and take that up to the campsite. The maps don't lie, if you are the the crossroads of the AT and Sunset Rocks Trail then you are standing within a mild shout of the primitive campsite.

This might be what I end up doing if the side roads aren't too great. My vehicle is 2wd and I haven't been able to get winter tires on it, so I don't want to risk getting stuck.
