I am familiar with a Jersey, a Holstein, an Angus, a Limousin, and a few other cows, but I am not familiar with the Swiss cow. Is is native to the Alps?

If you post a pic for January. You have to the end of January to post it. You only have to post 10 month worth of photos though so you can post as late as the last day of March for your first post and still hit the 10 month minimum.

@Luchtaine thanks for doing this again! I think I can speak for past participants that it helped get one off his butt :) I'm going to pass, only because I was the lucky winner last year :D

I'm going to give this a try again this year. I have to drive about 90 minutes to get to a spot.

I have my submission for January. I want to take this moment to say: 13 year olds are great exploring buddies AND terrible exploring buddies for identical reasons! So, here is where I want to return at least once each month this year.

As wild and jungle-like as it was in January I am curious to see what it will look like in spring and summer. I may need a machete and this woods is literally in the middle of town! LOL

ETA this a to the trip report: https://bushcraftusa.com/forum/threads/the-swamps-and-jungles-in-my-neighborhood.240022/

I don't expect to win anything but I'm in for the fun of it. Though I don't know if it's gonna look much different throughout the year...

Yep, just post them as you take them and post the month. You can add them all to the same post if you want. Just make sure to mention that in a new post when you do it so I get alerted and can note it in the tally.

    Also, become a supporter :dblthumb:

it’s worth doing, change may not look as drastic as some of the northern A.O.’s but it happens.

    Switzerland... Brown Swiss

    From the link...

The Brown Swiss originated on the slopes of the Alps in Switzerland; because they were bred in this harsh climate, they are resistant to the heat, cold and many other common cattle problems.

Darn. I picked my spot and now I am not sure I can get to it. It keeps snowing. The place is on the side of the mountains so who knows. I’ll keep watching.

I've had to really think about my spot. I can get to it pretty easily now, but when summer rolls around and the weeds/thorns get bad, it might be pretty tough.

    Cut your trail now!
The spot I have in mind is about a hundred yards from the road head, but I am not sure the road is passable. Gotta go look I guess.

That's my plan! :) I'd like to build a chair out there and do a quick coffee trip out there every month. Got the Junglas passaround coming my way so it should be fun!

I’m in. I have a question. Does it have to be the same spot for every month or can it be different each time?

Nevermind, still in, read the Op again same spot, same direction, same contents is pretty self explanatory.

Same spot, same photo every time. As described in the OP. The intent is to get every month of the years view of the same image.

Not too late at all. You can start as late as March and still make the 10 month minimum.

My January submission. Last year I walked a mile east and took the picture facing west, this year I walked a mile west and took the picture facing east. I live just beyond the patch of spruce trees on the horizon in the center of the picture. Meteorological observation, 1500, Jan. 7, 2019. Clear sky, temp 12 degrees, wind north 10 mph. A gain of 8:59 minutes of daylight since the winter solstice. Whooopppeee!

This is so cool! I didn’t know.

Best thing I ever did was make a pact with myself to go out on at least one pactivity each month, a while back. It’s been so easy and so rewarding to keep that pact.

But you don’t have to use math for this challenge, right? @x39 was just sneaking in extra points?

And anyway... it’s January. One is the right number. It’s also the loneliest number you’ll ever do, except for the number two.

I certainly have the area picked out, just need to pick a good shot from the options. There will probably be better choices than the one I make but that's okay, that'll be a learning experience. Really the temptation is to do like 5 spots to cover the bases but that's unnecessary overkill and not in compliance with the rules. So I'll pick one and if I regret it later then I'll pick a better one next time...

Really my biggest concern is if I lose access to the area. If I do it will only be temporary but enough to disqualify me.

    Sorry, just rambling...

Whoops... I didn’t realize we were supposed to commit to a spot. My River Rock by the Chestatee.

See that sand in front of the rock? The river is high in this pic but it was four feet higher the day before.

Edit: Went back to my rock for another January visit. It was supposed to snow today and they closed my school, but it turned out to be a beautiful day. That bottom pic is a natural basin that formed in the rock. I always find myself wondering if the Cherokee who lived here used it for anything.

These are some of my favourite challenges. I love seeing the same spots change through the year. It's also a great reason to have to go on an outing every month. I'm definitely in! Doubly, actually. The Adventure Kids and I are going to visit a local tree every month. They dubbed one "The Fire Tree" this past Fall and we decided that we'd watch it this year and track how it changes through the seasons. I'm also going to find a good spot for a monthly solo hike, which is an important personal goal of mine this year.

Thanks for another awesome challenge, @Luchtaine!

    question:

re: "Anyone completing the full 12 month gauntlet will receive an extra entry"

is the winner of this challenge determined by draw or by a judged criteria ?
    Thanks

Here is my submission. I like spots right in the bush. This one is right off a trail. I can have small cooking fires in the winter and use a gas stove in the summer. This spot is also kinda neat because it is on the border of a significant larch stand going into a spruce stand, with a few paper birch thrown in for good measure.

Determined by draw, everyone who fulfills the minimum requirements gets 1 entry. Anyone who completes the full 12 months get 2. Then I will draw randomly.

Thanks, I need some motivation to get out more. A specific goal might help.

Some really cool entries so far, really enjoying seeing the different ecosystems from all over.

    Thanks for doing this @Luchtaine

Hudson and I went to visit our spot and "the tree" yesterday, for our first official visit. First reason that I love this challenge: It's a great excuse to get out and go for a walk at least once a month, even if it's basically in your own backyard. Here's our first official look at our spot.

This is our spot. If it doesn't look like much, that's likely because you aren't looking at it through the eyes of a two year old. That's our little tree on the left.

This is our little tree. We call it "The Fire Tree".

Second reason that I love this challenge: This tree is going to change so much over the next 12 months. It's going to be really cool to watch it closely. :D

Hooah! I made it OUT, so I am IN! :4:

The SPOT. Now if I can find it again next month.

I took several ‘candidate’ shots and this one seems to show the most area for possible change with the seasons. The distant mountains should show snow cover change and the foreground will of course eventually turn green and then brown again.

Here's my January picture! It's on the farm my great grandfather used to own, before he passed away, and now we own part of it. I've barely been over there for years, and I'm kind of rediscovering it. This spot kind of spoke to me - I'm planning on spending lots of time here :) I've even been thinking of names for this little waterfall! I'm debating cutting those trees out before they fall in and make a mess :33: And they kind obstruct the view :D

@HannahT , I would just trim the branches off of the trees, and leave them over the stream. :) That is a beautiful place. Lot of potential there for a major cool camping spot. :)
