Fourth submission, April 2, 17:15. Met report, sunny, 37 degrees, winds WSW 15 mph, daylight gained since solstice, 4hours, 1 minute. The snow and ice in the open are largely gone, still plenty in the woods though. Not as muddy as I would have thought, which is nice, A pleasant afternoon....

Here's my April submission. Taken 04/09/2019 - Same Bat Time, same Bat Place.

    April Entry Photo.jpg

Things are starting to green up and the creek level has risen due to rain/snow melt upstream.

On my way there i walked past some tree stumps from winter firewood cutting. Shasta sitting there shows how deep the snow was. And I walked around the tree before I cut it. :)

    April 2019 Report

I thought I would be able to get to my spot with the river down to sane levels this weekend, but we got clobbered with rain again this morning... flood warnings, tornado warnings, the whole nine yards.

But, it cleared off a bit after noon so the dogs and I headed down to the river.

Kel says, "C'mon Dad, let's go!"

    Yup, plenty high.

Kel and I have our routine pretty well established now. Scope out the flow, then set up the stove to make some ramen with tuna and a big double-strength mug of tea. Listen to the river roar and read a few poems while it's getting ready. It’s nice having a ritual.

I am very taken with the Rothko canvas daypack. I like my Mother Canteen Carrier, my mil surplus haversacks, my faithful old Jansport daypack.... But this little Rothko has a Mora-esque quality: an inexpensive and unassuming bit of kit where everything comes together just so. It has become my favorite tote for short outings and — now that it’s jungle blanket weather — I am looking forward to taking it on an overnighter.

Found some Reishis. They’re soft and non-striated... probably just popped up last night and this morning.

We had a bit of excitement on the way back. Sam, my older Aussie, who loves the water, got in the river but misjudged how high and hard it was running. She couldn't get out and was getting swept downstream. I dropped my pack and poles and was running along trying to help her get out, but there was never a spot where we could both get near the bank at the same time and place. Fortunately, she found a spot where the bank shelved instead of overhanging right before she went into the rapids in front of my River Rock spot and was able to get out there.

I also made it out to my spot today for the April pic even though I should have been doing yardwork (starting the yw right after this post). Getting a little greener.

    20190414_150019.jpg

Afterwards I hit up some of my preferred fishing holes upstream. It's been a bit disappointing lately, choked with algae. But the past couple weekends we've had some good rain and it flushed things out pretty well. This one spot, very shallow but plenty of fish swimming around, some large sunfish and some even larger striped bass, the most I've seen there. Started with my Tenkara rod and fly. Bass weren't interested but the sunfish sure were. But I couldn't get any landed - I'd watch them come up and swallow the fly but they'd spit it right out again, I couldn't get a hook set. I had limited time so I switched to my ol' spincaster with an inline spinner. This one had the opposite effect - the sunfish weren't too interested but the striped bass started chasing it. Still, same result - had a couple of hits but wasn't able to set the hook. I would have been glad to spend the rest of the afternoon out there but I had to call it and get back to my responsibilities.

Speaking of, the older kid didn't want to come with me but the younger one did...

Spent a fair bit of time outside today cleaning the yard and gardens.

    IMG_4840.JPG

The grass is actually greening up. We had a family gathering Saturday. Burned lots of wood and had to rearrange the woodpile at the far upper left of the photo. Next to the wood pile in the upper left we have a compost bin which gets used lots at this time of year to help new growth.

The bucket top in the far left is for ash from our coal/wood stove. Have not had to use that for a few weeks now.

April's Update, amazing how green it's gotten over the last month, month and a half. Mosquitos, poison ivy, and snakes have all started to show up as well.... Also got to try out an LL Bean Continental Rucksack, really enjoyed using the pack, thanks BalsamFir!

Here is my spot in April. Almost all the snow is gone, and the beavers have repaired the dam enough to collect some water.

    P4193927.jpg

They actually seem to be more interested in the area upstream this year.

    P4193929.jpg

There is just some snow patches left in the shade areas.

We can let it slide since it’s out of your control. You still got out, and that’s clearly the bridge from your initial post so you had to be close.

Thanks. I was hoping to get on the other side which is where I took the first pic, but I couldn’t even get within site of the bridge from that direction. Hopefully water will be down next month.

It didn't appear that there was much change but there really is!!! I noticed just around the neighborhood after a big thunderstorm the other day that things looked so much greener...I guess it wasn't my imagination. It was so nice when @Russian_soda_can_ and I went out there after she was out of school...really beautiful. We need to do this on the weekend when we don't have to hurry!

    Greetings,

I have miscalculated and have disqualified myself as a result.:(

Having lost the first two months, March was my first submission. And I delayed April right until my holidays. Now I am back, today in the afternoon I flew back from Greece. And today being the last day of the month, it means I've lost April as well.

@Luchtaine, is it all right with you if I keep on posting, even if not eligible for the competition anymore? I love being a part of it.

    Regards,

    Christos

@Luchtaine here's my 4th submission. Taken mid-April. Really starting to fill in around the barn. Fun watching the changes come on so quickly. Also updated post #104 with the April photo the best I could.

    May 2019 Report

The forecast was for thunderstorms today, but the morning kept being persistently nice, so the dogs and I headed down to our River Rock spot.

It was a nice hike down to the river. This mountain laurel looks to be at absolute peak bloom. So pretty... but one of the most toxic plants on the planet.

The river is running green and not as high as it has been, but my stone basin is still underwater.

We sniffed around and peed on trees for a bit, then I started gathering and prepping material to cook lunch on my twig stove.

    Then the thunder came.

These dogs hate thunder. Sam disappeared into a cave somewhere and Kel started running around yelling "Daddy! Daddy! Put the tarp up before the thunder kills us!" Problem was with all that running around he scattered my tinder and twigs, knocking about half into the river.

I rigged my poncho in a lean-to. Kel planted himself flush up agin my side. I started working on more tinder and twigs. Thing is, when I would get a decently lofty pile, close to what you need to boil a quart of water in a twig stove, Kel would look over and think I was employing some advanced bushcraft technique to make a thunder nest for dogs. He'd crawl across my lap and curl up on it. He got away with that twice.

But, we got our lunch cooked, we got our poems read.

We waited most of it out, and then had a soggy trek back to the house.

My fifth entry, May 4. Met report, time 16:40, overcast, temperature 50 degrees, wind S 5 mph. Hours of daylight gained since solstice 5:32. A lovely mid spring day in eastern Maine. Not much change from last month, spring is slow in coming in these parts, but literally explodes when it does. In thirty days the trees will be in full leaf and the fields in the foreground will be green.

My May post. Already five months / posts into this contest; doesn't feel like that much time has passed. But I'm aiming to go 12 for 12, seven to go...

As I posted in the Gerber a go go thread, I had to chop my way to my spot now.

Then I went and had more fun afterwards. Really I do that every time but maybe this time I'll actually get around to posting some of it in the mini trip report thread...

I was hoping to catch more green in this one. Is it permissible for me to replace the picture in a few weeks if I can get out again and take a better one?

The walk to my waterfall felt like another place entirely!

Here's my little path. It's gonna need some upkeep, if I want to come back in June!

Great report, Brad. I chuckled reading this part. It totally reminds me of my kids when we get storms. haha! I'm glad you had a great, if soggy, day.
