Here in Bangor, one of the parks is the Bangor woods. It is hard pack dirt trails and dirt roads, well maintained and marked.

My Daughter was going for a run with her friends so I went for a woods walk. First thing I saw was a baby porcupine eating lunch. I sent a pic of him to my wife. She replied with "don't pet him".

There is a great trail that goes for a little over a mile out and around over a peat bog. The peat is up to 20 feet deep and very soft. The trail is made up of about 6 foot sections that are connected together and they have styrofoam (plastic?) Floats under them. There are pitcher plants, tiny pine trees, all kinds of fun stuff. You can not step off the boardwalk, and I think if you did you would sink fast. I think if I had to cross it I would need Rycroft skishoes or something like it.

This mushroom was near the parking lot. Almost a foot wide.
This was much smaller, but cool.

Just thought I would share. I'm lucky to have this park about 10 minutes drive from my house.

Whatever you do, do not pet a porcupine. ;)

I loved seeing all the flora you have shown off it a wet or swampy area of Maine.

Looks like a great place to walk. :) A bog is an amazing thing, if you really think about it. So many interesting things about them.

I used to work with a guy who was fascinated by bogs. So much so, that when he built his first house, he bought land that had a bog on it. He didn't build in the bog of course though. :) And when he moved, one of the places he was looking at, yup, it had a bog on the property. He bought that too. I have lost track of him now, not sure if he is living by a bog or not...

I’ve got dear friends in the area and would kove to check out but EVERYtime I go near Bangor/Bucksport/Orono as a destination (rather than on my way to The County or Acadia) my vehicle dies. It’s uncanny.

Your friend was a smart guy. Bogs and wetlands are where all the action is. I've always dreamed of having a house that overlooked such an area.

Fly in and rent a car. That way your car doesn't know where you are.

I'm having my WIFE drive me up to Puckerbrush next week. Have to go through Bangor to get there. Hopefully if she's driving...we'll break the trend instead of the car. :)

We have bogs down here in Florida also. It's common for lightning strikes to start a fire. They'll burn underground for a year or more...stainky!!:oops:

    Snowbird: What's that smell?
    Cracker: Bog fire.
