My first rifle was given to me by my uncle, who had inherited from my grandfather when he passed. That uncle has now been gone for about 15 years. Every now and then I like to take that rifle out of the safe, and just think about all the memories its brought me, and think about the stories it could probably tell.
Today, I took the old rifle for a walk.
As usual, I just reflected on times gone by. As I was walking back, I spotted a little cottontail sitting under an apple tree, and put the stalk on it. Got to within about 40-50 yards, and put that little CCI Quiet load right in his eye.
We now have dinner for tomorrow!
I then started thinking about how amazing it is to think such a simple tool can, and has, been feeding a family since the late '30s.
    It's the simple things...

Either the stock has been refinished or that rifle was treated with a lot of care over the years. Single shot .22's were generally working guns. My Stevens single shot has dispatched more critters than all my other guns put together.

Nice story. Keep the family legacy going!!

Excellent day out and great job putting meat in the pot. I like to use my grandfather's 30-30 for deer hunting and it has filled the freezer more than once! There's just something about using the tools of those who came before us...

Never refinished. The wood has held up much better than the metal finish that's for sure. The blueing is essentially non existent anymore, and the chrome on the bolt knob has worn off.
I often think about restoring it, but that's all the character.

It's a great little knife. Breaking down that rabbit was its first real job, and it did it well.

Birdman, it was rifles like yours that fed entire families during the Great Depression

.22 shorts were 3 boxes for 25¢ back then and folks wiped out the entire white tail population in north central Texas w/ them

TP&W is only just recently managing to re-establish a deer population in this area

there is a line in a Jimmy Buffet song that goes something like...

i'd like to sit on a bed in some motel and listen to all the stories it can tell

¿ wouldn't it be fun to listen to all the stories this little rifle could tell ?

Your trip brings back memories. I had Savage single shot 22 similar to your with the pull back firing pin.

    Great trip report!

I have a similar rifle. It needs some woods time.

I have an old Remington Model 41P that can fire Longs, LR, and Shorts. It was made in 1937 and was my Great Grandfathers. He got it when he was a teen and used it to hunt rabbits for the family. I know what you mean when you say "think about the stories it could tell." Every time I take it out I think of my great grandfather in his teens and into his twenties stomping around the woods in search for rabbits. Firearms have so much more meaning when they have stories like that behind them.

I’ve got a single barrel 12 gauge that’s been passed down a few generations. When I was young I liked the shiny new pump.... now I enjoy walking with that very lightweight old shotgun. My grandfather kept the family fed during the depression with it.... my dad took many pheasant and rabbit with it. It has filled my pot many times, and now my son likes to borrow it!.... many stories!
