so i'm a little over a year away from my 40th and starting to plan what i want to do to celebrate.

here is what i'm thinking so far for locations and what i want to do, i'm right now planning on being gone for a week :

    places:
    - Alaska (possibly Denali but open to others places)
    - Glacier NP
    - Grand Tetons
    - possible other?

    what I want to do:
    - back country camping - ideally place to make a fire at night and not at a campsite if at all possible which i realize is more difficult in national parks but i don't mind them as long as it's isolated and not many people are around
    - hiking anywhere from 0-20 miles a day
    - fishing
    - exploring the area (ties into the hiking/camping)

A friend of mine once told me to save Alaska for last as much as possible.
He said that after Alaska, everything else is a letdown. So maybe hit up all the other classic places first.

sounds like the Bob Marshall Complex would work nicely :)

Glacier is great, but very restrictive on where you can camp; also there backcountry permit system is a little complex and sometimes requires luck; I hate depending on luck :)

    lots of good places
only thing i have to add is if you want to backcountry camp
learn the regs and land designations for the area
while some sensitive areas include Nat parks, that restrict such camping, they are usually surrounded by National and state forests , wilderness areas where such camping is allowed
if your willing to do 0-20 miles a day
for your 40th maybe do a 40 mile trek? could be a loop, or 20 out and in
can do the 40 miles in 2 days or 5 days regardless its a 40 mile trek to celebrate your 40th
i am thinking of doing a 50 mile trek for my 50th,

Glacier np requires you camp in backcountry campgrounds with other groups of backpackers so I'd take that off the list

i went on a babymoon with my wife to Alaska and dying to go back, so far other national parks have been awesome as well :)

need to know more about Bob Marshall!!

i'm liking the idea of a 40 mile trek for 40 but i might do something with 40 in it ;)

no trips, but I've met him- he lives not too far away in Bozeman; I've also interacted with him many times on his site

I wouldn't hesitate to contact him if you have questions; he'll steer you in the right direction
