I have seen a shelf that fits onto an Alice pack. My Alice Pack did not come with one. What are the shelves used for? Is worth tracking one down?

I have one on mine. If you strip your ALICE pack off you can use the frame with the shelf as a pack board

    Thanks for the quick response!

So...unless I strip the pack off, there is no real need for it? I assumed it would be used to hold a sleep system or something. I do have the sleep system pouch, but not the sleeping bags and bivy sack.

If you load out your pack with the shelf on it will help with that giving the bottom of the pack some suport. you can also use the slots in the shelf to strap items onto so it works for that as well. What I have done on the past is once you get to where you are going, strip off the pack, then use the frame with the shelf as a pack pboard to collect fire wood. I've used that same method as well as using a GI Packboard and attaching my gear to that too. Makes for more versatility IMHO

    Quick follow up:

I received my shelf from Colemans and couldn't be happier! I can see this thing being very helpful for a variety of tasks! Coleman's service was very fast, product(s) arrived as described and I will be doing more business with them as soon as my funny money fund fill up a little more.

Thanks again all for the help. I really appreciate it. The helpfulness of fellow members has really impressed me on this board!

    Thanks again!

Anybody have trouble with the shelf falling off when there's nothing on it. Mine is extremely loose and falls off at the drop of a hat if the frame is not being used. I'm thinking about finding a way to permanently attach it so I don't have to worry about losing it. Anybody have ideas about this? Thanks.

Mine is the type that is supposed to be rivited to the frame and was loose when the pack was empty, but a couple of heavy zip ties fixed it.

The one I have just slips on and off too dang easy. Has a few holes in it and a couple that look like I could wire it on. Starting to sound like the best fix so far. I'll take pics of it soon with one of my bedroll options and alice buttpack on it. Can't believe I didn't grab a kidney pad for it when I bought the frame a few months back and just noticed that I didn't have one for it the other day. Now I'm thinking about doing a lightweight setup like on that video. Seems like a pretty good setup to me.

Old thread, I know, but I have a question regarding USGI shelves for ALICE Packs.
I am only finding them in Black currently, but notice that the shelves on frames are OD green.
Is there a difference between them besides color?

From what I have seen...and I could be very wrong, but here goes. The cargo shelves that I have seen that were made specifically for the ALICE frame have been black, I know the one I have is.

I have another rucksack frame cargo shelve that is Olive Drab in colour, and attaches to the frame differently, and has a loose fit unless there is a load on the frame bearing weight down on it. I think that these version are left over from the Vietnam War era and were made for the Lightweight Rucksack with the tubular riveted frame? This cargo shelf will fit and work with the ALICE Frame, but was made for the earlier LW Rucksack.

Hope that was not too confusing and made some sense?

    Thanks for the pic Mark.

I've seen that one online by various sellers.
They are calling it an "Special Forces" shelf (don't know why).

Some of the sellers call them genuine issue.

The only time I'll buy something that is not USGI is
when I can't get it from an American manufacturer.

yes the lightweight ruck was the pack issued to troops during vietnam.
the alice was not issued to military forces until after 1973.
though the war didn't officially end until 1975, most U.S. combat troops had been pulled out of nam by the end of 1973.
the alice pack was still undergoing testing at that time and never saw service in vietnam...woods

Picture 8 by imseeker, on Flickr.... Girl I know uses this very well. It has worked for water hauling and some firewood, but not like transporting several .30 cal cans. Works great doing that app. If it's not weighted down (obvious) or zip tied/duct taped it can be kinda noisy..which ain't good sometimes..LOL

    Nice.

I've heard that some are attached loosely and rattle when not loaded
(nothing a few strategically placed sheetmetal screws, band clamps or u-bolts can't solve).

    :)

The issue shelf has two long hooks to hang from the crossbars, some are a loose fit, some are not. In the upper position it was used for radios, ammo cans and such, in the lower position for things like jerry cans and mortar rounds. Using the shelf involves removing the pack. I keep mine on all the time, held by two heavy cable ties, to provide a "foot" for the pack. To use the shelf you really need a pair of load straps ($2-3 from most places that sell the shelf) or rig your own.

As pack frames go the ALICE isn't bad at all - compared to many others. As a youth I lugged the Trapper Nelson wood & canvas frame with bulky items like Indian pumps and outboard motors. The ALICE is lighter and better, especially with good straps and belt.

I got my shelf a few days ago.

I installed it and found my pack to be about 6" above the shelf.
The straps to my MSS carrier through the two slots at the bottom so
I'd have to completely remove it to completely seat the shelf in it's place.

I can seat the shelf in place, but it rests "on" the straps. I know
that over time this will wear down the straps by cutting into them.

I can see a benefit to the shelf if it was supporting something,
but as it stands now, not only does it look like it'll be useless in
my pack's current configuration, but it might be in the way of the
MSS Pack (once I have a sleeping bag in it).

I'm assuming I can live without the shelf installed?

That's strange. I'm in the process of rebuilding an ALICE frame with new straps, an adapter for Kifaru belt and a pack vaguely based on the ALICE medium. I have the shelf, the type that slides over the cross-piece and the strap connecters aren't anywhere near the shelf. Do you have any pictures?

I'll post some tomorrow. I've seen illustrations where the pack rides
high and doesn't land on the shelf. I'll try to find those as well.

Then again, I have a set of MOLLE II Shoulder Straps & Waist Belt.
Maybe this affects the placement of the pack somehow?
I had to remove and re-install my shoulder straps for servicing.
It landed right back in the same position.
I followed a YouTube tutorial video.

The ALICE medium does ride a little high on the frame. The lower end of the straps loop through the hole in the "foot" of the frame.

There is a shelf with "ears" that is sometimes listed as being an ALICE shelf, but it is not. That shelf was designed to fit the jungle pack, predesessor to the ALICE system.
