    Army-issued canvas bag, 2014

Unless somebody posts pics of even older bags in active use ASAP, I'm going to entitle myself to a prize of one (1) beer for spotting a pre-WW2 canvas bag in use by an uniformed member of military forces.

This here is a Finnish army frameless canvas backpack, essentially the same model as issued in the 1930s, attached to a Ranger/LRP team leader (reserve officer) candidate. Picture is from last summer. Brings back memories, although I sincerely believed 15 years ago that we'd be the last group to be burdened with these... ha, fool me, should have known better!

These were issued to be used as day packs, in which capacity they're at least useful. I'm guessing they're still serving the same function.

I guess our Russian members could top this with Vesmeshok pics, but I'm still claiming that beer. ;)

I actually had some of my canvas stuff out this week. Here are a couple things...

The pack is Norwegian I believe.....I've had it for a few years. The tarp is just half of a Dutch pup tent with some cordage and poles, stakes rolled up inside.

    003.jpg

This is a nice replica of German WWII reversible smock, it feels like a lightweight canvas, maybe similar to duck cloth. Anyway, it's my go-to pullover for spring and fall, and even into winter with layers.
    004.jpg

I think this jacket is Czech?? again.....feels like a lightweight canvas or duck cloth. I like the features on this jacket, good pockets, good fall camo, comfortable hood, elastic waist draft skirt.

Skullhead, that Czech (?) jacket is awesome :D. Almost could buy one if I hadn't made a conscious decision to stay away from camouflaged items - I look militaristic enough in plain colors...

Speaking of which, have you got any odd looks from wearing that German smock? I've always liked the colors and the cut of those smocks, but been a little concerned for being associated with neo-Nazis or something by some clothing police pukes. Okay, they don't frequent forests but I often have to use public transportation of some kind to get there.

Thanks, it only cost me $25 too. I am not a big wearer of camo either, those two things and possibly one more item is all I use for camo. I prefer the earth tones, greens, tans, browns and all that.

As for the smock, I really only use it when in the woods, and it packs up small enough to fit in my pack for when I need it. If someone gets offended by me wearing that, that is their problem. It'd be different if I had some SS patch on the arm or something. One can talk about all the bad with the whole Nazi thing, but one can't argue that the majority of their gear wasn't top notch. I like the patterns and the functionality of the piece. I usually wear an old ALICE belt on the outside to hang my knife on so I don't have to keep pulling up the smock, doing that also helps keeping the smock from riding up.

    Musette Bag 12 x 12 x 5 inches

The small OD green is a Rothco canvas Ammo Pouch that i modified so i could carry it as a separate survival kit. The canteen bag is also a Rothco canvas OD green.
The black shoulder pistol pouch is also canvas with nylon strap
The musette bag is a back pack that i modified with a leather strap so i could use it as shoulder bag because the straps on the back are to short for me to use as a backpack.
The musette bag is easily over packed as shoulderbag so this is now my range bag.

I've always been a fan of those German camo patters. THought they seemed much more effective than many others.

    Where did you get that?

Yes, that jacket is Czech used in our army in 50's and 60's. Our soldiers called it "salamander". BTW, nice piece. Czech

    A couple new acquisitions

OK, so in my Salt & Pepper addiction I went a searching, then pickings are slim these days. I found a few overpriced (but not as bad with a 50% off sale) and away we go.

The first is a the haversack for the Salt & Pepper backpack. Condition pretty good. I have given the leather 1 neats foot application, I will see if it warrants another.
    Haver Front.jpg Haver Back.jpg

The second is a "Radiation Meter Bag". Its about 6x16
    rad bag side.jpg
    rad bag inside.jpg

    I got them from https://www.armynavydeals.com/asp/default.asp
Which is doing 50% off and 1/item shipping for superbowl weekend.

So if they have something you want, and like their price, today is the day.
Frankly, they have some high prices and I wouldnt buy from them except with a sale like this.
OTOH, YMMV. Below is an older Swedish pack I am returning (damage to left end, bottom).

Looks very nice and at affordable price, too. Might want one if only I hadn't already have far too many packs :D.

Can I ask you what's the canteen in that pic? I've been on a lookout for wide-mouth metal canteens just like that.

I love what you did with this.

My forest pack is plain with no leather, but by far one of my all time favorite packs.

Thanks a lot. I actually did this for me originally. But my oldest Son David's best friend is studying Forestry at Auburn University and has done some summer internships for the USFS. So I gave it to him last summer.

    SG French Military Shoulder Bag

So I have been restoring a couple of these. I originally ordered 3, and sent 1 back. I am in love with these bags for the sheer amount of leather. On the outside a robust shoulder strap. Side d-rings, Bottom d-rings, back belt loops. There is leather lining on the inside covering the back and the top. Leather lining on the bottom and a 1 inch leather strip across the front on the bottom on the inside (12 x 3 1/ 2 x 9h).

    FrenchBag_Open1.jpg
    FrenchBag_OnSide.jpg
    FrenchBag_Back.jpg

I am up to 4 neatsfoot applications on the interior leather, that was the driest. I originally used some Lexol leather cleaner to get the surface crap off, then went to the neatsfoot. I will have to do a few more treaments to some spots. The brass I hit with a solution (2 parts white vinegar, 1/4 part salt, 2 parts water) and a used toothbrush. I just ordered some SnoSeal for the outside.

I ordered a few more, these are awesome to give as gifts. I figure I can remove a few of the interior canvas dividers to increase usability of the bag.

    They are going for 20.

I checked out their site today after I found the answer further down. They seem affordable and willing to customize. Will they add waist belts?

This is the pack I use, and it is the basis for my "Ultimate Rucksack" that I have planned and will put on an old GI mountain rucksack frame.

I have since added better shoulder pads. The small pads that are on the strap are simply shields to keep the D ring from pinching me. I have a better design worked out.
