We went on a group photo excursion that I helped to organize. The goal was to go from Thursday until Sunday to photograph wildflowers in Colorado. The San Juan Mountains had received so much snow this year that the flowers were a little bit late but we still found some. Quite a few of the mountain roads and passes were still closed. Hope it is ok to post some of my cell phone photos here. We made bacon!

First camping area close to American Basin

Firewood for the night and some rain protection. It was a rainy trip. There was a lot of downed green wood due to avalanches but not too much dry wood.

American Basin. There should be flowers here at this spot at the end of July. Still a lot of snow.

    Luckily there were a few.

Our second camping area. The most open and closest to a road but finding camping spots here was very limited. One person actually was on her first camping trip ever on this adventure.

Used to elk hunt the Alpine Loop. Been into the Big Blue wilderness and the San Juan. Is that old Scout still at the bottom of Engineer Pass? I hiked the Horse Thief pack trail into some great country.

    Nice stuff @Lars :)
Old Jeep running a bit warm? I've never been at that kind of altitude before, are there issues with older vehicles and altitude?

Still snow that high, eh? I'm living in the wrong place. I'd sure like to be able to go for a drive and enjoy some cool air.

I used to live in the suburbs of Denver, and really miss camping, and hiking in the mountains. Great pictures, but it does make me a little sad as I miss it so much! LOL.

What was wrong with the Jeep, and how did you fix it? My greatest fear was breaking down while off roading in mountains with my Jeep Wrangler. I usually went alone, well with my dog, but he can't fix cars, so...… :)

This car made it over the Alpine Loop at least three times without any issues. I think the part just wore out. Luckily it happened when we were near Crested Butte (maybe around 9000 feet) when we were near civilization and not on the other side of a difficult mountain pass.

The radiator was leaking and the Jeep is in the shop right now. At least we hope it is just the radiator.

Nope. It was a 60's era International Scout that you could see to the right of the Engineer Pass lookout. Maybe they hauled it out of there. It looked like it fell off the trail to the right, and then rolled down the side of the mountain. I saw it sometime between 1998 and 2003. Not sure of the exact year.

^^^^^Another beautiful pic! There have been rumors for decades that Grizzly Bears still exist in the San Juan mountains, but no actual evidence that I have ever come across.

I love that Camp Chef three burner stove. I've got the exact stove on the back porch and bout the full flat grill, grill box, and the pizza/bread oven. Yeah, it's a great tool.

Ahhh, the parts of Colorado I miss. I do get back now and then but only the occasional dirt road/jeep trail pass. And a campfire in the summer to boot! Lots of snow/moisture this past year. Thanks for sharing the trip!

+1, I sure miss the days I could strap on a backpack and trot on up to alpine tundra elevation.

This makes me wish I'd joined a month or two before I actually did last year - I took the family on a road trip to Colorado last summer (July), visited a few nostalgia spots from earlier days, including Crested Butte. But, though we did hit up a mountain lake, I didn't really know where to go like you went on this trip (and I was driving a 4x4); these destinations would have been perfect.

Had I made your acquaintance back then, I could have learned some pointers from you of where to find these places. Perhaps I'll have another opportunity in another year or two or three.

Thanks again for sharing all this.

Just let me know if you need any information. I take landscape photos for a living and organize many photo workshops so I know 'a few' spots in Colorado.
