We woke up dreading this morning as our beloved Taco has been refusing all efforts to get him to eat and drink
and he was pretty much shut down whe we got up so we called a vet friend and took the final step that seems to come all to often for the animals we live with and love as family.

Taco was someone elses reject and we trapped him at a friends house who had called and said he was sleeping on their porch and stealing cat food to survive.

That was several years ago and we sure enjoyed him as long as possible, he was pretty much a one person dog as long as my wife was around and would snarl at me anytime I got close to her.
When she was gone I guess he thought I was better than nothing and would grace me with some laptime or hit me up for treats.
He was a great alarm and would always let us know when anything was happening and went absolutely bonkers when he heard my wifes car.

In 47 years together we have loved and lost many animals to old age or sickness and it never gets any easier but we keep taking them in because they need us and we need them.

We still have a blind Italian greyhound and a Catahoula and a border collie + a wonderful cat to keep us company and all of them important as family.

This aint very bushy but you all are like family too and it helps me to share my losses with people who care.

To paraphrase a neighbor's 11-year-old daughter, "Taco's off on his next great adventure." She was speaking of her cat Speckles, whom she said was learning the ways of a ninja.

It's always sad to lose a loved one.

I almost didn't click on this post because of my own memories. Four years ago I was completely paralysed from gbs. During that long painful recovery, had my wife and my dog at my side. Jake was my shadow from day one. I also prayed that I would pass before him. On top of everything else. Lost Jake 2 years ago. I mentioned in another post that dogs are the most noble animal that walks the earth, not man. I know your pain, your other pups will help. I vowed never again would I go through this again. No more dogs. But early this year we adoped a stray, Anne. She is wonderful. I hope Jake undersands.

The tragedy of keeping the company of animals is that we are most often forced to outlive them. I like to think that it’s because they have a finite amount of love to give and because they give it with such intensity, the tank runs empty before we are ready.

I am sincerely sorry for your loss.

It’s the worst part of pet ownership, yet those of us who love and keep animals as companions keep on doing it. No matter how you slice it, it is still the loss of a valued family member. I’m on my third Rottweiler, having lost my last one to cancer at 8 years of age. Tessie was the best dog I ever had, and was a soul mate. My sincerest condolences on your loss.

Sorry to hear about Taco. He looked like a good little buddy.
I went through the same kind of crash at the end of July - Mabel the Maine Coon got real sick (tumor) and we had to have her put down. We had 15 years with her.
