    So...
Found this forum and joined back in 2010 as an escape from school and work. Met a couple folks on here, and we had a meet up. Went fairly well, as informal as it was.

I've seen some new posts from SD folks recently, and figured what the hell?

So, I am proposing a west river meet, late summer early fall. We could do an east river one too, especially during pheasant season. Any interest out there? Lots of options... We could even do a winter one, xc skiing and snowshoeing, what have you.

    Thoughts?

Another bump, then gonna start setting a date and such.

    Any other interested parties?

    Last call...

Will be me and my bowyer roommate hosting, with assist from my friend Kyle if Kyle can make it. Both are inactive members on here.

WY, MT, ND, MN, IA, NE, all surrounding states are welcome. If you're game and want to come from further (Canada?), you're sure welcome but we need to know in by May 1st to get this together.

If you wish to invite such members, please do so, I posted in the Liar's Bench.

Will bump this thread here and there, May 1st is the cutoff.

Late summer early fall, dates TBD.

So the first 3 of us are fairly flexible, what's good for you other 3? I was thinking after the Rally would be best. How many days you guys wanna do? Like 3? Mid week, weekend?

After the rally would be good, I'd probably only be able to do a day or two.

I propose August 17-19th. 17th is a Friday, 18th-19th is Saturday and Sunday. Actual goings on will be Saturday mostly.

Thoughts? If we get consensus, then it's deciding location.

I will be at the steam and threshing show in sturgis that week end otherwise i am flexible. i find things quieter in the hills after laborday, alot less tourist and atv problems.. I live near Roubaix lake if that helps with a meet up area. some good areas to my west to meet.

Recalculating, will pick new dates. Was thinking up behind or at Hanna campground, or out around Black Fox. If we do a campground with grates we can do fire. Castle Peak is an option too. Roubaix is good too.

Never been to Grizzly Bear, but have driven past several times. It's down south off the pigtails, fairly close to Rushmore, but I never hear anyone talk about it. Maybe once or twice in outdoors circles.

New proposed date, September 8-9, should be uncrowded but raises family stuff since school has started if you have kids. Does this work?

If it does, then location. I'm for wherever, but some of you folks have drive time and work issues. Haven't been in the "remote" southern hills for a while, I'm leaning that way.

There's tons of places we've been to, just a question of where fire is legal.

    Options on the table, folks!

good for me, campgrounds are alot quieter that time of year. Hanna is nice, black fox is nice. both are a little more secluded. Open to other ideas. Even the wyoming side. anyone know what sand creek is like?

I haven't been on the forum for a long time but would be interested in a meet up again for sure if it's still open to more people. Sand Creek is great for camping. It's right next to a nice stream, quite, and has a nice hiking path nearby that has plants that are not seen anywhere else in the area.

@Aquacopter, were you the guy that brought the bamboo to demonstrate the fire plow at the last one? I was the fishing guy, with the stained/sleeveless t shirt and the old full-size Jeep truck wearing a tan boonie hat.

ETA: I like the idea of Sand Creek, never been there. However if it's in WY none of us can fish for dinner (if we choose), unless we have a WY license. If that's what folks would like, no prob. Up to what folks would like to do.

If we go where we held the last one, can fish and gold pan, etc. But no fires. Plus we're doing off season. Rod and Gun up Spearfish canyon is possible. Ditch Creek is pretty remote too.

    Anyone? Votes on location?

Castle Peak is nice and remote, more so than Ditch Creek IMO, but Ditch Creek is very nice. Would we need a WY off-road permit for Sand Creek? I'm not 100% sure on it's location but I've been looking at checking out some mines on the Wyoming side of the state line and saw I needed a WY off-road permit if I wanted to drive to them.

i am flexible on location. I don't plan on a fishing license this year, not in the budget. but don't let that stop anyone. I love to be near water. The map says the road to sand creek is a regular road. It could have changed. I liked the wyoming side idea due to fact they allow open fires. But we need to find a place that is familiar.

    where was the last one?

A hidey hole with an impoundment on a small creek south of Deerfield. No actual campground, Forest Service land. Only 2 of us stayed.

Gonna give it till this coming Monday, then Sept 8-9th it is.

Given Blackhillz outing thread, voting for Ditch Creek. Lots nearby (for our our purposes), fishing, and a campground so there's fire allowed. Close to the spot from 5yrs ago, plenty to see and do and explore. And after pack up on Sunday there's a solid greasy spoon to eat at in Hill City for those so inclined. For those going north, forest service back roads will kick you out onto 85 around Rochford or around Lead depending on preference.

Grizzly Creek down by Rushmore is my #2 pick. Never stayed at either one, but have drove past each several times. Fishing, fire, etc. Fishing is better up by Ditch Creek. Lots more abandoned mines and such down by Grizzly. Hanna is in the running too, like that spot.

Locking the dates Monday, locking location by July 1st.

Let's hear your 2 cents everyone...

If you think they'd be a good fit, it's up for consideration. That said, this is kinda a BCUSA thing, as we all have that in common. Got 2 solid in-person friends I've met through here and a few I'd meet if I could. Shoot me a PM and we'll see if it'll run. Gotta check my inbox again, but we have a possible MT member coming.
    I'm open to others.

September 8th and 9th should work for me.
If people want to go check out abandoned mines and such I will be happy to lead expeditions as I've been researching and documenting them for going on 8 years now.

I've stayed at Ditch Creek alot back in HS, it's a nice little campground, not alot of traffic and no light pollution.

There's a handful of mines in the area and about 10miles away are Ice Cave, Bear Trap Cave and Igloo Cave. Granted I think you still have to get a permit to go into those (they are trying to stop the spread of White Nose Disease that kills off bats) but I will have to double check.

I've never stayed at Grizzly Creek but have poked arround there before. Its a beautiful area but there's alot more traffic going by with 16A right there, granted most of the tourists will have gone home by Sept.

Just down Iron Mt. Road from Grizzly Creek near Lakota Lake is the remains of Cuyahoga Mine which is in a nice valley with lots of building remains and the mine itself. There's also a handful of other mines I have marked that are in the area. Just a little further down the road is the Ghost Town of Spokane for those who have never been.

    Edit:
Forgot to say, I think if anyone has any friends that would be interested i think we should let them come, it would help spread interest in Bushcraft and our forum IMO.

Well said. Agreed that more people with similar interests makes for an interesting outing.

Forgot about Lakota lake, that'd be a good spot too but not sure if there's fire grates.

ETA: don't remember seeing grates there, and no camp sites I'm aware of. Nice spot though, fished a bit there.

OK, dates are locked. Weekend of September 8-9.

Ditch Creek seems to be the front-runner for location, anyone else have input?

    Bump.

July 1st approaches, unless there is further input or discussion the location will be Ditch Creek.

Get to where the inflow comes into Deerfield. There's a tee (all blacktop/paved coming from Hill City).

Turn south (left) off the pavement where the streams flow in. Ditch Creek Rd.

Go along till you see a sign/turnoff on your right, that's the spot.

Can give road numbers if you'd like, guessing you can read a map tolerable well. Need more help before the meet just let me know.
