Thought I would open this thread so we could discuss the possibilities of doing a meet up in Arkansas somewhere.

I'm open to suggestions. There are so many areas available let's kick some thoughts around.

I'd be willing to make that drive as long as my wife doesn't mind a new family member coming back from wildrose kennels in jasper. It's a beautiful area but I've never camped out there only traveled through.

Newton county appears to have several hiking trails.
As a group, would the general interest be toward strictly camping and socializing, hiking, canoeing, or what?

Brother I would be happy just to attend a meet-up. They always seam so far away. I was looking at the one in blue river Oklahoma but I don't see myself driving 6+ hours just to be in Oklahoma (there is a reason our government gave all that land in Oklahoma to the Indians !)
    I love camping, hiking, canoeing.
I'm not very good at socializing but I can try.
If your looking for a location for car camping.
Lost valley canoe in Ponca Arkansas has a private camp ground with rest rooms & coin op hot showers & laundry.
Plus a general store with canoe rentals.
With advanced notice and enuf attendance we could probably reserve the whole camp ground.
If your looking for a hike in meet-up there are endless options in the buffalo national river.
I'll keep watching this thread. Hopefully it will spark some interest !

Arkansas is where I am from and travel home often to visit my parents. When were you thinking for this meet up? If the timing works, do you mind if a Florida person attends?

I would be interested in this as well. More so if its in NW or SW Arkansas. I'd be coming from NE Texas. I spent 10 years in Johnson County/Russellville area in NW Arkansas so I know my way around. Mount Nebo's pretty nice, though not 'epic. Devil's Den. Some of the trails around the national forest by Hot Springs are suppose to be amazing.

The Newton county area may be a good all around area. I've been sneaking peeks (while here at work) at some of the attractions. There are several hiking trails, canoeing, caving, etc.

It would be cool if we could reserve, if not the whole campground, a large section to use as a base camp if nothing else, and form "excursion groups" to different trails and such.

This is sounding good so far, and of course we would want people from everywhere to feel welcome to attend!

If you look on a map at Newton county, it has quite a bit of interstate access coming toward it before you have to hit the "Arkansas scenic highways."

Yes..there is a reason for the quotation marks...:p

I might also suggest the Redding camp area around Cass. On the Mulberry river, camping, hiking , etc.

The mulberry river is a sweet spot. I've camped at turner bend several times. And a couple different spots up river from there.

    I'm interested, gang!

I've never canoed. Kayaked some at Lake Ouachita.

Isn't Whitaker's Point there? Seems like a popular hiking destination.

Whitaker point is south of Ponca, the area in Newton County being discussed.

Well, looks like we are narrowing down an area. Gee....less than an hour from the house...

Reckon we better talk dates, to see if we can arrange something with the campground?

I may drive to Lost Valley this weekend and do some scouting around.

Mapquest says 41 minutes to the campground...let's see how weather works out.

After things are more definate I may be able to drop in for the day/evening to hang out. That depends on distance and temp as I only have a motorcycle. Don't plan for my sake though.

I'm sure if you wanted to spend the night equipment would be available. Throw a sleeping bag on the bike, and I'm sure I could have an extra tent within reach. I doubt food would be a problem either.

An hour and 37 minutes drive for a 55 mile trip. You've got to love winding, mountain roads!

Despite being on a bushcraft forum, I don't own a tent, hammock, or sleeping bag, lol. I have a ThermaRest pad and a GoreTex bivy (never used!). It sounds fun. Let's toss it around, think of some dates, and it'll give me a reason to buy some more gear!

    Hahaha!

Academy makes a pretty nice 30 degree bag for under $20. I carry it in my truck especially when visiting family. Also a 3 man tent I picked up at Coleman brand new for $49.
    Or, Lost Valley has cabins..

Let's definitely hear some date suggestions.

Called the wife tonight to see if we were clear for a road trip this weekend, so I think we are heading out Saturday to scout around the Valley area for a bit.

Beautiful! If people want to come, surely we can, as a community, make up any shortfalls on gear that may come to surface. We may be able to get some new people involved.

I agree, March to May could be prime time. Could be wet and cold in March, wet in April, and who knows about May. And there could be fantastic weather any given day of any of those months.
But May will begin the tourist increase.

I have two 12" by 12" easy-up's I could bring. They would help keep the rain off.

I'm on the other side of the state, but I'd like to try to make it. I have been hiking all over and under Newton county in the past. Lost valley is one of my most favorite spots, though I usually like to go in cold weather to avoid the crowds.

I usually go state hwy 62 to harrison then turn south on 7. There is another hwy west of 7 that I sometimes take for a change of scenery but I can't remember the number. I'm in NE AR so I-40 is a good ways down.

The cabins look thematic at a reasonable price too, but there are only three cabins. They have hot tubs, but I'm not tubbing with any of you guys, LOL.

I don't even know if I'll be able to afford a trip. Definitely not to a tourist trap. Would have to be dispersed camping for me.

Not a fan of state parks either. Too many rules, not nearly as bushcraft friendly as the US forests. Which we have miles and miles and miles of.

I haven't been to Redding camp, but I once camped not too far from there, straight north of Clarksville about 20 miles.

    https://www.google.com/maps/@35.8231863,-93.4615017,15.5z?hl=en

    It was pretty nice.

I would have an easier time getting somewhere in the Ouachita forest though.

You guys should look at the ozark national forest too.

Mt Magazine has a rural camp site with a pont 100 yards away and numerous trails connected to it.you can use open fire as long as there is no ban.

I vote where ever there is dispersment camping allowed or primitive. Don't love car camping or being next to other groups. (Will still come though) would love somewhere with hiking trails. Would love to try out canoeing too.

Ok..I saw some places in the same area that allowed primitive camping along the hiking trail areas.

C'mon guys, give me locations. I don't get out in the public areas much, so point me in a direction and I'll do my best to scope some things out.

I think around the Whitaker point area they allow off trail camping.

I would like to go. Im from Arkansas. Jasper county/Buffalo river has a lot of trails. The river and trails have massive bluffs. Floating depends on rainfall
